I have had meniere's disease for almost 20 years in one ear. About 4 years ago, I got it in the other and now my hearing is really bad. Distortion, low volume, tinnitus, roaring, fullness, you name it. Everything in the book. But one thing happens to all the noise when I blow through my nose harder than usual. The noise and distortion goes away. My hearing is still not great but I can understand people. But that only lasts a 5-10 seconds. Then it feels like it pops back and the hearing is terrible again. To me it seems like there's fluid in there and I'm moving it around when I blow through my nose. I am on a diuretic for fluid and have been on it for many years. I also have meclizine and diazepam for when I get vertigo. That's another thing that's been happening lately. I have had some violent vertigo atttacks. I fell a couple of times. But at least they only last a few minutes. I am only 49 years old. I am very nervous about what life will be like for me as I get older. Just FYI, I have been to specialists and have had endolymphatic sac surgery and multiple steroid shots that were effective at first, but then did nothing. I am in some serious need of help. Prednisone is not an option as I was on it for too long and now refuse to take anymore. Thanks for listening.
Hi Snuka. No, I do not experience the short burst of improved hearing that you get. To help with your MD, have you tried all of the things mentioned on this forum? JOH, Vit C, Antivirals, Heal your Headache diet?
Actually, I have not tried any of those. I have been going to specialists for years and not one mentioned any of those things. Do they help with hearing sometimes? My distortion is so bad sometimes that I can't understand someone talking straight in front of me to my face.
Yikes! In my opinion there is more knowledge here than 99% of the "specialists" know. Start with Heal Your Headache Research AntiVirals on this forum, and Dr. Gacek Research John of Ohio on this forum My road to improvement started with mega doses of Vitamin C, also from knowledge on this forum. It was not a lasting solution but it made a big difference and it proved to me that I could do things to make myself better. When my Meniere's is really bad, my hearing in left ear is about zero. However, when it is under control with AVs and diet, my hearing is much improved. I am currently taking 3 Valacyclovir a day, monolaurin, lysin, olive leaf, vit D vit C, a supplement called Vivi, and some B complex. Importantly, I avoid foods with high arginine, such as nuts and many other things, especially MSG. I also think the diuretic is a bad idea.
Thanks for the info. It really sucks that you can't trust a meniere's specialist. Why would a diuretic be bad. They have had me on that since all of this started. It supposed to help with the fluid in the ears.
Well, it isn't working. It might not be bad, but I just don't see why it would be good. Staying nice and hydrated seems like a better plan to me. There was a study which showed that extra water may help - it is on this forum too.
Thank you Donamo. I go to the ENT surgeon next week so I will see what he says. I want to see what he says about the fluid pill. What is so frustrating to me is that I feel like this is something physical, like fluid in my eustachian tube, but no one can give me an answer as to why the hearing clears up when I blow. Doesn't seem like anyone else has this issue. I feel like a freak of nature.
