Sudden, split second loud noises in affected ear when trying to fall asleep at night?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this…

When I’m lying in bed waiting to fall asleep I frequently hear a sudden, loud noise in my affected (left) ear. Most of the time it sounds as if a fly or bee has flown right past my ear, like a “zzzzp!”. It only lasts a split second and can be quite startling. Sometimes it will happen a second time or even third time. I wondered if it could be a similar phenomenon to the falling/tripping up/jerking sensation that happens at the brink of sleep - but I don’t feel like I’m close to sleep when it happens. I can’t hear much with my affected ear these days so I wonder if it’s some kind of tinnitus zap?

Last night it sounded as if my boyfriend had leaned over close to my ear and started speaking loudly, but what I ‘heard’ lasted about a second. I was so startled I couldn’t get to sleep for about an hour!

It never happens at any other time of day and only when I’m lying on my right side, with my left ear exposed (to be fair, that’s the position I always settle for the night in!). It started a couple of months ago and may have coincided with a new variety of tinnitus joining the collection during my current flare up.

I don't post often but wanted to let you know I have had Meniere's for over 6 years now and the last 4 or 5 of those years I get the occasional loud zap/zing like you describe. And it is usually when I am in bed trying to fall asleep. I am nearly deaf in my affected ear so it is weird to hear something so loud.

I have also experienced this, but not just at night. Sometimes when this happens at night with my eyes closed, I also experience a flash of light along with it, as if perhaps the vision center of my brain has been stimulated. I think there is some crossover at this point. It can be very startling.

Yep exact same thing happening to me, it stopped a while ago but now its my body/arm/leg jumping/jerking now. 2 time it felt like i was electrocuted for like 2-3 second almost like a seizure but it do not happen any more, just the body/arm/leg jump/jerk.

Yes I agree with everyone else. I get that from time to time. Usually it wakes me up and then I fall asleep listening to whatever the noise changed too.
