I am a former patient of Dr Derebery. Is she no longer at House? Where is she practicing?

Unfortunately, Dr. Derebery retired few years ago. I believe it was in 2021, which is a shame because she is one of the most knowledgeable people when it comes to Menieres.

thank you for the information. I dont know where to turn now. Are there any other doctors working with both antivirals and allergy?

I don't know of any that combine with allergies. Perhaps someone else at the House Clinic has picked up the baton?

I’m also a former patient of Dr. Derebery. I saw her in ‘21 right before she retired. She is still with House/PIH, but only doing research now. Dr Kevin Peng sees her patients now. From experience, Dr. Peng will prescribe antivirals, but only for a very short duration.

He does’t think they work. That being said, he did prescribe them to me, but I believe for only 2 weeks, and was upfront about not prescribing them after that.

i know they worked for me the first time. I dont know if they will this time. I guess it just depends on whether a virus was part of the assault on the inner ear. I think allergy treatments helped me over time, as the nurse said, taking some water out of the pitcher that is the immune system that over flows when too much is going on.

Did you find something that worked for you?

Unfortunately, I haven’t really tapped into much that has helped. And I’ve tried quite a bit of different paths. I’m still on immunotherapy, but it hasn’t had the effect that I had hoped. I know sometimes for it to work you have to be on a maintenance dose, which I am not up to yet, will be come the winter though. There’s a seasonality to my symptoms every year, where I do by far the worst this time of years and I do better in the winter time. I think in last 4 weeks I may even have progressed to bilateral. I go to the doctor tomorrow, so we shall see.

how are you doing? What kind of symptoms have reoccurred for you ?

I am sorry nothing has worked for you. My recurrence is a very sudden hearing loss including distortion. I only have one hearing ear but i can tell by feel that when thjngs happen they happen in both ears. Last time i got a 60% (wild guess) improvement in the first month of acyclovir. Then nothing more from antivirals. Over a long period - years- allergy shots seemed to take me the rest of the way and i had normal hearing and balance to last week. I was around someone who had a fragrance on and every time i got near my hearing clogged up. I have no idea if that actually provoked the relapse or was evidence of it in progoress.I think last time my wonky immune system was hit by a perfect storm of viral reoccurrence and allergy or maybe some good old fashioned stress and the ear paid for the immune response. This time, who knows? I will just try what seemed to work last time and hope for the best.

I’m sorry to hear about the backsliding of symptoms. Keep us posted on how you’re going about treatment and best of luck.
