I have a plethora of health issues, almost all of which postdated my contracting severe bilateral Menieres disease in May, 2002. Because many include pain, I have been on a variety of pain medications for many years, five over time.

About two months ago it became clear my pain regimen with the things I was taking would no longer work. The two primary ones were Oxycodone tablets and Buprenorphine patches. Increased doses were necessary to keep pain at even an endurable level, and I became so irritable, surly, inhospitable that I was driving my poor, patient wife into an early grave.

Our internist told us of a drug that was used to detox people called Suboxone, a combination of very powerful buprenorphine and naloxone. It had been discovered that it was for many people a very effective pain reliever, replacing their previous opioid regimens.

I started with it last week--it is a sublingual medication, with small films you can cut to adjust dosages. In short, it has done wonders with my pain and personality. My pain isn't just bearable; it's just a minor irritant now. I can exercise and go about the limited activities open to me without fear of making the pain worse.

The kicker is that is has side effects. In most people, they pass after a few days, or at least moderate. A positive one is that my tinnitus has been cut in half in intensitywo of them have for me. Unfortunately, a couple have not, and they are doozies. My hearing (I have a cochlear implant and two hearing aids) is down a good 30%. My fatigue level and drowsiness are way up. But worst is my general mental acuity and balance--I take Valium for dizziness, but I feel like, both physically and mentally, I am slogging through wet concrete. I am making mental mistakes I never have before, and my motor skills, like typing this, are rather compromised.

I will be candid. The pain relief is so important I cannot give this medication up. I can only hope the bad side effects go away or diminish. I am writing this only to see if anyone else has used this medication and what your experience has been. Thanks in advance for any replies

Wishing you luck that the side effects go away! I know it has been such a long road for you.
