    Hi all,

Well this is my first post here, but I was a member on the old site, recognize some of your names. I could use some help deciding next steps for me to try...

I was dx with menieres 7 years ago, first four years were horrible, but I was vertigo free for last 2.5 years, and about a week ago it came back. During the first four years I tried everything - diuretic, no salt, steroids (pills and injections), allergy testing and shots, antiviral (altho only one for one month, so maybe I need to try longer?) JOH for eight months. NOTHING had any effect. What did work?

Well, I decided I did not want to wait any longer to start a family, got off all medications, and got pregnant. I had a bad vertigo episode about month 3, ended up in the hospital for a few days on fluids to make sure I did not get dehydrated and the babies were ok (yes I have twins!) and then since then was great. No vertigo, my ear would clog up from time to time but not as bad as now.

So now I have been having vertigo every day or every other day for the past week. Just for about a minute each time, been trying to control with mecklizine. Today I had a long one, lasted for an hour.

I am so frustrated because I really don't know what I did other than being pregnant (and that can't be a treatment plan!) that made me feel better. As far as what I've been doing different lately that may have brought it back - I have been sick A LOT over the last two months. The kids started at group daycare June 1 and we all have had runny noses and sore throat since then. So maybe it is an immune system thing?

I am turning it to the experts, as I am lost and don't know what to do next. My doctor, fwiw will just do a hearing and balance test and tell me other than diuretic there's nothing to do but wait until it's bad enough he will give me gent. Injection (grr). What should I try? Who should I see?

It's all part of having meniere's. I can remember going months without an episode. I would think, oh I am out of the woods and then the ugly beast would return. Don't beat yourself up thinking you did anything to bring out the beast. What you can do is find a good otolaryngologist who will be able to diagnosis and treat your symptoms. If you live near a teaching hospital that is a good place to start. In the meantime, try to eliminate all caffeine, alcohol and try a low sodium diet (but not too low). Get lots of rest, and exercise, and try to eliminate stress. I find yoga a great stress reliever. I hope you find relief soon. Peace.

Sorry you are having this relapse. Is there any possibility you might have MAV?

I also was wondering if the vertigo might be MAV (Migraine Associated Vertigo) you might look that up and consider the triggers, or perhaps BPPV in which case you could learn the Epley Maneuver to stop it. If I understand correctly such brief episodes aren't typical of pure Meniere's vertigo.

How wonderful that going for having a family worked out so nicely--may it continue to do so and soon!

Thanks for the input. I had thought about MAV some time ago, but my dr said because of the low level hearing loss it was definitely Menieres. Hmm, maybe it's both. I always get my vertigo episodes in clusters, like every day or so for a couple weeks, and then it usually calms down a little. And sometimes the actual vertigo would be long (hour or longer) other times just a few minutes. And I feel pretty terrible most of those two weeks - off balance, ear clogged, objects I look at seem to vibrate (if that makes sense). For those that have it, does this sound consistent with MAV?

I did a quick search and see the diet/trigger recommendations so can try those. Curious, those that are treated for MAV, do you see a neurologist or oto? Since my doctor dismissed not sure he'd be up for investigating with me, so need to decide who I could see for second opinion...

On the previous site I remember someone posting about a book "Heal your Headache" and it clearly puts the process in place to eliminate food triggers. Believe I read a lot of people with MAV have found some success through this process. Good luck.

(My attacks are always in clusters and during those times even on a "non dizzy" day I feel horrible....but I contribute mine to seasonal and sinus versus MAV.)

    Hey Alynn,
I think you know the answer to your question, you are just as experienced as anyone else on this site. Most likely what worked last time, will work again this time, simply wait it out...
    Be well
