My ear doctor prescribed Acyclovir 400 mil and said to take 2 times a day. This much less than what others are taking. I figured I would just take what he prescribed and then ask him about upping the dose later. So far have taken just one pill yesterday afternoon. I didn't notice any kind of side affects. This morning my hearing seems sensitive. I can't have to TV very loud. I have experienced sound seeming louder than it should before. But its been a few years. I wear ear plugs when using things like a mixer that makes the tinnitus worse. Going through some loud tinnitus this week before taking the acyclovir. So not sure if its the medication. I would think it was a side affect if I had taken more and it hadn't been a few hours ago. Just curious if others had this reaction after just 1 pill and hours later. I will continue to take and see what happens. Lysine give me loud tinnitus when I tried it but that started soon after taking it.
That may be a good sign that the av and virus are at war. Some do get worse before better whens starting antivirals, I would pursue it due to your ear is reacting to it.
I just started Acyclovir and like you, I was only prescribed 400 mg, 2 X a day. I have been taking it since Friday evening and each day since staring the pills I have had a couple hours of my ear feeling clearer but everything always sounds much louder than normal when that is happening. Lets hope its a good sign. Good luck!
I know it is difficult at times but if your doctors can give you enough for 800 mg 3 times a day (2400 mg a day), which is the starting dose for av's and mm, you would have a better chance of suppressing the virus, if you do have the virus attached to the nerve in the inner ear. Maybe by letting your dr know your ear is reacting to the av, that might convince them. Either case good luck to you both!
I am.wondering those of you taking ant-vitals or lysine have had a blood test to see if you have a virus. I am.not sure if the blood test is even possible.
No. The fact is nearly everyone has or has had numerous herpes viruses in their body. No one knows which one(s) affect the ear or exactly what stage they must be in to cause problems so it would be a waste of time.
I was tested for herpes virus and it came back positive, but most people would even if they do not have MM
That good to know Redbird maybe it is the med doing it to me. Going to continue on and see what happens. Vickie, I am hoping if I get any kind of help that I can then tell the doctor and ask him to up the dose. My thinking is he might be more receptive if I am having a reaction. My doctor did a blood test before he prescribed the antiviral. Which is find to me. I expect though there are many people who have the antibodies and don't have this condition. But maybe as a doctor it helps him feel its ok to prescribe the meds. I have never had a cold sore and was surprised when the test was positive. Proves we can have the virus and not be aware of it.
Lindy, that is exactly why my PCP ran the bloodwork to justify her prescribing me acyclovir. I agree once your Dr hears you are getting results from taking the AV, hopefully he/she may be more likely to prescribe the proper dosage for MM. Keeping my fingers crossed for you and redbird.
Thanks need as many fingers crossed as I can get. I've had this so many years been told if it was a virus problem it burned itself out long ago. well see hopefully
not so, I have MM 48 years and been on acyclovir 1 year 7 months and after the 4th day on it my vertigo attacks stopped, and after a few months my daily dizzy spells stopped. Nothing burned out for me and since the av is working my MM is viral.
thanks! deadeye, my wish is that everyone would get the relief I do from av's, its not a perfect solution but its far far better than what I was living with.
wish I knew why it worked for me 3 mths and stopped? man I thought I was on the road felt so good to be alive with few restrictions
Could it be the antivirals were controlling the MM vertigo but do you think you also have MAV? Have you tried any migraine medications or have any MAV symptoms, keep in mind you do not need a headache/migraine to have MAV. Are you still taking the allergy shots?
I would take that as a sign that allergies were defintely involved. I wonder if you discussed it with the dr if he might decrease and slow down the treatment so you would have less reaction to them butstill get the benefit.
Lindy I first started taking acyclovir about 5-6 weeks ago. 800 mgs 3X's PD. The reason I was taking them was not to stop vertigo. I only had vertigo 3 times last year and three times this year. But after the second time this year my ear went FULL. Little sounds were horribly distorted and loud. Although my hearing test said I was not hearing well in low frequencies, there was a roar going on inside my head. Every little ping sounded like wrenches on pipes, hammers on anvils. I wear an ear plug in the affected ear 24/7. I wanted to get clear hearing again. After about 4 days on acyclovir my hearing cleared. The tinnitus got louder. And I started having vertigo every day. I was on vacation the first 10 days so I was able to take a nap every time the vertigo hit. But, the next week I had to go back to work. The vertigo was still happening for another 7 days and then my ear went full again. My ear has been full for 18 days now. I have stayed on the acyclovir, lysine, vinpocetine, lemon bioflavonoids faithfully and will continue for at least 3 months. I'm hoping some day soon for clear hearing without vertigo.
Santa, why dont you stop all these things and see if the symptoms stop? Antivirals should not precipitate a whole new range of symptoms. Maybe you are allergic to one or more of the things you are taking. If it is a virus, the antiviral alone will take care of it.
