Has anyone had mri with contrast/dye? Did you have any problem with it? Is it necessary to have contrast for cranial nerves to be seen on mri? Thanks.
I did I got very sick and had dizziness like crazy gagging and almost puking the machine. That night I had a bad spin of vertigo.
Hi verti. Like June, I've had several MRI's and have never had a problem with them. Worst thing was a metallic taste in my mouth but it was no big deal and went away pretty quickly. All my best to you, Lulu
I had it when my ent ordered n MRI of my brain, many years ago (about 8 yrs ago) although I have a huge phobia of getting stuff like that injected in me, I made quite a scene when it was time for it, they went very slowly when they injected me but besides my anxiety attack over it I had no physical reaction to it.
I had an MRI with contrast 10 days ago. Nurse said, "You are going in that tube for 20 minutes, then we will bring you out - put in the dye and put you back in for 10 minutes." I said,"OK, is it alright if I go to sleep?" She said, "Yes, just don't move." I did fall asleep, but only for a few seconds. I think. The worst part of the whole experience for me was the nurse had to probe to find a vein. Probing hurts. I didn't feel the dye going in.
I did have one. I was very nervous about the dye because I have a lot of allergies and sensitivities. I told them that, and they had a doctor on hand (to do what? I don't remember now, but it did give me some comfort). Fortunately, I did not have a problem with it. I went to a place with an "open" mri. I still felt a bit closed in. I don't think I could have handled the tube.
If you have never had an mri, KEEP YOUR EYES CLOSED. That is the key. Also ask for a pillow for knees and neck or whatever you need to be comfortable. This makes it possible to just relax without moving. If you are uncomfortable it is very hard to lie still for the whole time and moving is a no no, messes up the pictures. I get so comfortable i fall asleep. In the beginning, i did little mental relaxation exercises but i have had so many, i just relax right away now.
the noise freaks me out I cant stand that constant noise pounding in my head from the MRI, I avoid them like the plague. and yes I wear the headsets, they don't help me much. I am extremely noise sensitive. My ent wanted me to have one every few years, I don't go. One of my brain was enough. My symptoms did not change so was no need for more mri's imo. I did have another one for my back and couldn't take the noise of that one either plus I am so uncomfortable, laying on my back is extremely bad for my back, I can barely get up and walk when it is done.
Thanks everyone! I had an mri w/o contrast about 25 years ago & had to stay in the machine 45 min. I didn't think I was going to get through the ordeal then & I didn't have bilateral MM. If I can't have an open one I probably won't have it done. I swore I would never have another one whatever happened to me. I do have a problem with dyes & can't take antihistamines because of seizures so I feel it's a losing situation for me whatever I do. I am very noise sensitive & can barely walk just from lying flat in a dentist chair a few min. There's nothing that can be done for MM anyway so why bother. Not a very good attitude is it?
MRI's are not for MM, they are to see if anything else might be going on. In my case, it was an acoustic neuroma and i had lifesaving surgery.
Verti, Ask the dentist or the technician not to lay you back so far in the chair. Mine will tilt the chair back slowly until I indicate that that's far enough. Also, when having my hair cut, I wash it at home first so the barber won't tilt me back to wash it in the sink (we have a lot of women barbers here in Alabama). Almost always you can ask to be made more comfortable in an uncomfortable situation.
Verti, I've also asked my dentist and hygienist not to tilt me way back. They have been able to keep my head up.
I can't have a MRI (brain shunt for different issues). But my CT scans often are with contrast and I have not had an issue. For the MRI, although I can't have one, the place that I went for one of my CT scans offered music choices of your selection to listen to and help get your mind off the tight space. I assumed that all offer that?
