I have bilateral MM & am experiencing some of the most awful sounds. Before I went to bed last night my own voice sounded loud to me when I spoke. Crazy me thought this was a good sign & maybe my hearing was getting better. I felt off balance which is the norm for me. I went to bed as usual propped up on several pillows. I dozed off for a minute, woke up with what sounded like a car horn blowing in right ear. It would honk 8 times, skip a couple seconds, & honk 10 time, skip a couple. When I moved or got up the honking got faster & louder. This was accompanied by what sounded like 2 radio's in the back ground each on a different station. I was terrified because this is/was my better ear. I finally realized this was my heartbeat. I have arrythmia problems. I have had the swooshing sounds before but this is ridiculous. Sorry to be so dramatic but I was frightened. I finally went to sleep & when I woke I am back to the katydid's in left ear & roaring in right ear.
Somebody please tell me you have experienced this? Does this mean my hearing is getting worse or that I've gone nuts? I thought after 25 years of this I had heard it all but I was wrong again. I know this is nothing compared to some of the things we experience but it was a little upsetting. Sorry to vent on you but I needed to tell somebody. Thanks for listening.

I dont know what it means in your case. These symptoms were the kind i had with cochlear hydrops. They are also the kind that the acyclovir did the best job of getting rid of, although right in the beginning, on the third day of acyclovir, they were worse. But from day 4 on they began to improve. I no longer have these kinds of symptoms (knock on wood).

I woke up the other morning hearing an alarm clock beeping, although I hadn't set the alarm. After getting up to turn it off I discovered it was my heart beat that I've been hearing for quite a while in my right ear, but it had never been so loud before. It is unnerving.

It is unnerving for sure & I never get used to it.

June, I'm glad you found help. Everything I've tried so far makes me worse.

    thanks.

verti, I am so sorry you are going through this. I have had some of that loud alarm type tinnitus. It was very hard for me. I couldn't sleep and that didn't do anything for my emotional state. The best thing I could do is distract myself by doing puzzles until I got so tired I fell asleep. I try to trust that eventually it will pass. I have noticed that a lot of times now when I get that kind of tinnitus, after it passes my hearing is a bit better. So I actually think it is a sign of healing--like nerves waking up. But that doesn't make it any more tolerable.

That kind where my voice got loud only happened once and it was recently. It was really weird. That was just after I started taking Acyclovir, and I believe it was a sign it was working.

Thanks bytheBay. Not much we can do but "grin & bear it". By the time one of my ears start feeling better the other one starts. It's a never ending battle.
