So have you ever been accused of being drunk in public? I had a manager come up to me in the thrift store and ask me to leave because I was drunk... I said I am not drunk I have inner issues and I am sort of dizzy I came in here instead of driving home in my car dizzy. Ma'am if you don't leave I am going to call the police. I said call them I am not drunk. The manager who knows me came out of the back as the lady started towards her to tell her I was drunk she pointed me to me and the manager started laughing. She sent the employee on break came over and apologized. I can't help be think this could have gone much worse had the manager not seen me this way before and we had a conversation about it.
KarenPlus8 - I have a card that I carry in my wallet with my name and the following: I am not drunk or high -- I suffer from Meniere's Disease. Please see reverse for emergency info. I don't remember how I got it, but perhaps someone on the forum knows where to obtain it. There is also one that can be clipped to your car visor in case you're ever stopped by the police.
The carry card for the wallet is a great idea! I hope someone here will know how to obtain it. As far as the car goes, I'm not sure it would be good for a police officer to be made aware of the fact you are driving while suffering from a condition that causes vertigo. Karen, you are very lucky the manager was there and aware of your situation! I can't imagine the embarrassment of having police come and put you throught the tests they do to determine if you are sober!
Found it! Go to Meniere's Resources Inc. The wallet card link is on the right bottom corner of the page. Meniere’s Symptom Card FREE for your wallet scannable QR code for first responders, space for personal medical info To print Click Wallet Card
I have medic alert bracelet that has Meneres on it as a condition but not many EMT's I have run into know what it is.
I'm not familiar with what QR scannable code is, but I would guess that the EMT's can get info on the symptoms of Menieres by using the code.
I have been accused of being drunk when I was vomiting in the street and swaying all over the place. Its amazing how many people assumed it was alcohol and walked on by instead of asking If I was okay. Then again our illness is quite rare
God I love the laby and would get a second one if I had to endure barfing in streets and being told I was a drunk.
KP8: sometimes if you carry a cane or walking stick then it makes our illness seem more real/visible to others. A cane sort of legitimizes it to others and if nothing else you can hit shit with it when you get reall pissed off. I used to carry an ax handle but my PO said that was not allowed and best I keep it in the garage. Good Luck! This disease sucks!
A qr code is something you can scan/swipe with a mobile device (qr code scanner apps are free) and it brings you to a website on the net depending what website is coded into it.
