I am bouncing around old posts here and came across a discussion about the role of certain and specific modalities that some Chiropractors use (Blair, NUCCA etc) to help MM. I have had many good Chiro experiences and am aware that my Atlas jets off slightly to the right, which is also the side of my affected ear. I researched my town and saw quite a number of Chiro's doing these adjustments.

Would somebody who has tried this and it helped or didn't help please chime in here. You know how this disease can get one into the run around spending all kinds of money looking for any relief. Your experiences matter very much to me.

    Thank you,
    Holly

Everyone has their own opinion - but I had very good results with Nucca. Not sure if it helped my meniere's but do know that I felt better after doing it; less headaches and neck aches. I moved a year ago and the closest Nucca to me is almost 2 hrs away so have not gone as regularly and I think there is a difference...will be setting up an appt. Not for full vertigo but I can feel some neck tension at times and some little 1/2 spin when I start to lay down so know that there is something cervical for that.

My view is that anything is worth trying - and even if it doesn't fix the "one" thing, it may help with others and feeling better is never a bad thing!

used it quite a bit several years ago great lady in Austin(nucca) she could relieve my symptoms but only about once every 12 sessions leaving Austin for home I could feel my symptoms melt away/would last about a month and they would return she just couldn't duplicate whatever was working enough to justify the 100 mile drive one way was very frustrating

Thanks deadeye and nicmger! There is a Nucca chiro in about a 30 minute walk from my apt. I appreciate the inputs so much! I saw a physical therapist last week that showed a simple exercise that one can do to help keep the atlas from going out. Happy to share this if either of you would like to know about it.

Would absolutely like to know about the exercise. Good luck with the Nucca or whatever you choose to go with.

My Atlas goes on to the right so I do the exercise this way. If you are a lefty, do the other side. The PT said only one side for this to work.

Phase 1: Sitting in upright position:

    1) Place your RT hand under chin supporting neck. Tilt head to the left bringing ear towrd shoulder and hold.
    2) Rotate your head toward your left shoulder and hold.
    3) Place left hand against left temple and press your head into your left hand without moving your head.
    4) Repeat 5 times holding each repition for several seconds.

Phase 2: Manintaining same head position:

    5) Place left hand against right temple. Press head into left hand without moving head.
    6) Repeat 5 times holding each repition for several seconds.

Go back to doing your usual backflips and cartwheels :) I added :)
    Hope that's helpful.

I was diagnosed with MM about 3 months ago and immediately started NUCCA. It has helped tremendously. I no longer have fullness in the ear, no more vertigo attacks (but have mild dizziness at times), and it has reduced my tinnitus. I started with two sessions per week, then tapered to one session a week and now I'm up to one session every 2 weeks. I would highly recommend it. http://www.nucca.org/find_doctor.php

Wow thanks Sara8! I just left a phone message for a practioner here in San Francisco. How quickly did you first notice results?

The fullness in my ear and vertigo was gone after the first visit. The tinnitus has gradually tapered off. The brain fog took about 8 visits before it completely went away. Not everything will be resolved immediately so just have patience and continue on the path your chiro recommends for you.

Besides the NUCCA helping with the Meniere's, I noticed several other things improving not related to the MM. I feel that NUCCA has been extremely beneficial overall.

Good luck and keep us updated on how your first visit goes!

I haven't yet heard back from the NUCCA Chiro but am seing a phsical therapist for TMJ which causes/aggravates MM. He told me to stay way from manipulations because I am hypermobile in all my joints and it is stabilization that is needed and that adjustments only contribute to going more toward flexibility. A bit conflicted now and wondered if anyone has hypermobile joints that did one of the upper cervical manipulations with success, especially you Sara8.

    Thanks!!!

To my knowledge I do not have hypermobile joints. I saw a physical therapy for 5 sessions before stopping because I was receiving no improvment for the MM which they initially thought was BPPV. I feel like I've gained so much for the NUCCA so try not to rule that out quite yet. Here's another interesting article - http://electronicnewsnetwork.com/release/chiropractic-care-ends-vertigo-in-menieres-disease-patients-20103895/

    Thanks Sara8! Love the encouragement.

I have a very close friend who is a retired Chiro and when I discussed this with her, she turned me on to a method developed by a man named Sweat who cured a janitors hearing loss and had other miraculous results. Now the process is called Atlas Orthagonal. Its been around for 30-40 years. The process doesn't use any force and actually the diagnosis is calibrated using a machine that looks at the micro adjustments needed and performs these without forced manipulations. I found a practioner here in san Francisco who I spoke with yesterday and she has had good results with MM patients but needs to do an initial exam then can tell me. I never heard back from the NUCCA chiro so I am assuming that the Universe is sending me data and resource that are my best shot. NUCCA is Plan B.

For anybody who want to know more, here are a coupe links:

http://globalao.com This will tell you about the process and help you fnd practioners.

http://www.sweatinstitute.com/t2/index.htm Here is more info on the Sweat Institute.

    I'll keep you posted.

Hollyflo - Atlas Orthogonal and Nucca operate on the same theory. Nucca does not use what I would consider "force" - you would barely feel anything different than someone touching your neck. Unfortunately for me, now that I live in VA there are not a lot of options (no Atlas, Blair, Grostic, etc...close). Going in tomorrow for Nucca which is the "closest" and even that will be about 45 min to an hour away.

So….I spoke with the NUCCA Chiro closet to me yesterday. Nice man.

The price of this treatment went like this: First appointment is a whole body exam for imbalance and an adjustment: $230.

Then if NUCCA looks like the thing needed it is 4 Xrays; 2 before the first adjustment, 2 adjustments, then 2 Xrays after the second adjustment:
    $685.

So that's quite a pricetag to see if it has any affect. Is that in the range of the experience of others here?

I did also connect with an Atlas Orthogonal Chiro here and am expecting a call back soon about her program.

I have seen 4 other highly recommended Chiros in the past year with no lasting results but none of them specialized in upper cervical. No money coming in, lots going out and getting worse ??? :(

Hollyflo - my insurance at the time covered everything as it is treated like a "normal" chiropractor adjustment. I only had to make the standard co-pay.

That said, it is my understanding that Nucca is based on the detailed analysis of the xrays. Once you start though, I didn't have to have xrays every quarter or anything like that. It was just at the beginning to make sure what exactly was off and their plan to align; and then confirmation that the adjustments worked.

No insurance..out of pocket. I did speak with the AO Chiro after writing and her whole month program including X-rays was about the same price as the first three NUCCA treatments. This was based on twice a week for three weeks after first sessions. Probably going in that direction….sleeping on it...

My first appt - initial examination with x-rays and adjustment was $190. For all visits after that I pay $40.
