I got a bad cold, and I am more stuffy in the sinuses than I have been in a long while. (I used to have this problem a lot, and went off cow dairy a couple years ago, which seemed to solve it, but not this time.) The congestion has gone to my ears--both of them, but especially the bad one. Of course any stuffiness in my ears disturbs me, but I think this might have happened pre-Meniere's.

As many of you know I'm fairly new to anti-virals and have been having recent success. My hearing recovery does not seem to have gone away, so I think I'm okay, but just wanted to bounce this off those of you who can relate.

I'm curious if those of you who have been on anti-virals a long time would increase your dose in a situation like this.

I'm currently in the tapering stage--taking 2 grams of valacyclovir/day. I went down from the original dose of 3 grams/day at the end of last week.

The advice I got being on acyclovir is if sick, affected by allergy season, stressed or fatigued increase dosage until the situation has passed, I would assume it is the same for valcyclovir.

I did not. I did not assume that all symptoms were a result of the virus alone. I assumed that some illnesses and stressors caused the mm symptoms to flare up and that the virus was only one of several things that had that power. I dont know whether i was correct or not. In any event, i never failed to return to the good hearing i achieved before minor setbacks.

That advice came from Dr G he explained that anything that weakens he immune system can allow the virus in our inner ear to come out of its latent state and trigger symptoms the extra dsoe compensates for the weakened state of the immune system to keep the virus latent.

When I get sick. stressed fatigued etc I can feel vertigo lurking, my tinnitus is louder etc, when I usually don't have these symptoms and the extra dose during those times, take care of it for me.

I will be going to the Bay tomorrow to go fishing.

My alllergist has got me on fluticasone, which I think is also known as flonaze. For the last several years in the fall and winter I would wake up with a head full and lungs full of mucous.

This stuff is two sprays at night and two in the morning and I barely have any mucous.

OUr bodies make about 32 oz of mucous per day for normal lubrication of body parts. However; I must have been making way more than that. It would take 10-15 minutes every morning of blowing nose and coughing up phlegm.

Thank you, everyone. Confusing that the two longtime AV folks have conflicting advice, but I still appreciate it very much. We're all finding our way here in a world of murky information, but I am still marveling and so grateful that it is even possible to improve these things that for a while I thought would only get worse.

I'm a little better today. I notice that when my "bad" ear does clear a little, it seems to do it in a better way than it would have before the AVs. Still equivocating about whether to add an extra dose, but that's okay. If I don't and it doesn't work this time, there is a future with this thing that actually helps. I am just in such a better place with this than I was.

Have a great time at the Bay tomorrow, Santa. I'm doing some preparing for the season of St. Nick here. : )

If it is allergies, and you take an antihistamine, the mucous should clear. If it doesn't, might point to a cold. Allegra 24 hours is the one a friend of mine started using daily and no more vertigo. I take that daily too.

In any case, the mucous does indicate an immune system struggle which then to me makes sense to hit the AV's harder since the inner ear is vulnerable.

There are a few other things that I've used to amp up the immune system:

Colloidal Silver- Brand Mesosilver- a liquid can be taken orally and put on cottom ball and placed in ear.

Jarrow Formulas Green Tea capsules which contain EGCG.

    AHCC-Now Brand

All of these can be found on Amazon.

The fishing was wonderful. Catching fish not so good. The trout was too small and the sail cats were big and messy. Talk about mucous!? These sail cats put slobber about three feet up your line. It's like snot, thick and sticky.

Just mentioning here that probiotics are a boost to the immune system. I take 30 billion per day. (It takes me awhile to count them all. Hehehe)

I thought for sure I had an ear infection. Left ear was so full I couldn't hear, tinnitus increased even more in that ear, even my eyes were affected. I could barely read, and they hurt, along with my ear, and also dizzy. My doctor said - migraine. I was so frustrated. Still had a refill on Valacyclovir from the shingles outbreak I had a few months ago, so I got it refilled and have been taking them. Feel a lot better now. Back to regular loud tinnitus, as opposed to crazy loud, if you know what I mean. My eyes are so much better, and I feel better. But what do I know, I'm not a doctor, maybe it's just a coincidence. I am grateful I feel better, I know that!

I came down with an upper respiratory infection Friday and been congested, runny nose, tearing eyes, tinnitus louder tired chills, sinus headache etc.
I increased my dose of acyclovir since Friday and so far it has kept any dizziness/vertigo away and my tinnitus is at usual level.
Laney it could be a coincidence for you but there is a good chance the valcyclovir helped you.

If you do suffer from migraines or even if you don't you may want to check out the database about MAV migraine associated vertigo (headaches do not need to be present). The symptoms are very similar to MM but the vertigo is different, it usually isn't rotational but more like dizziness and unbalanced feeling afaik.

In any case I am glad you are feeling better.

meant to add many of us who have MM also have MAV.

    Vivki:

I am, sincerely, very happy that antiviral(s), joh, or whatever, is working for your treatment of MD.

However, regarding your Tinnitus noise level: have you given SERC a try? I’ve gone from 224mg/day down to a maintenance regimen of 96mg/day with no increase in my T-noise level. Also, the recent audio test results, done at my otologist/neurotologist’s office, show my hearing range, in the affected ear, has returned to (almost) normal.

When Tinnitus tries to make a comeback, I hit it with 6-tabs (96mg), and that (usually) does the trick. As a matter of fact, the initial time I did 6-tabs, I got a monstrous headache, but, for the first time in eight years, there was absolutely, positively, no noise to be heard.

It may be worth looking into, Vicki.

    Sincerely.

Thanks Backlite, my tinnitus is very low and usually don't notice it since background noise drowns it out. Its only when I am sick, etc it acts up, other than that it is very livable.

I don't like taking medication if I can help it, but I appreciate your suggestion :) I know SERC has helped many with MM symtpoms.

The FDA has classified SERC as a placebo, so, technically, if you live in the US, you wouldn’t be taking ‘medication’, just inert tablets. Go figure.

    Sorry, Vicki. ‘Couldn’t resist.

@BackLite. Do you live in the US and if so how did you come by SERC to purchase?

LOL I know that's why you can only get it at a compound pharmacy in the USA. The AVs are doing a great job with my MM for almost 2 years now so far :) Jan 2015 will be 2 years I am vertigo free! fingers crossed!

    Hi Hollyflo:

I live in Canada, where SERC (Betahistine Hydrochloride) is (generally) the first drug prescribed to treat MD. I ‘think’ my Meniere’s is in a natural state of remission, however, as far as I can tell, SERC’s ability to relieve the effects of Tinnitus has, for the most part, been ignored or unproven.

I have provided some text files and images to a few friends and acquaintances to help them approach their GP/ENT about high-dosage use as ‘the general regimen’ is 3x16mg/day, which, imho, is pretty much ineffective.

I should also mention the cost. As I am covered by BC Pharmacare, once I have reached my deductible (this year: mid-June), most of my med’s are covered 100% (so it’s a good time to stock up).

    Sincerely,

    Hollyflo:

I believe our American neighbors have to take their prescriptions to Wallgreens (only). From there, it’s sent to a compounding pharmacist who prepares(?) the medication and sends it back to Wallgreens.

One could also purchase it on-line from a Canadian distributor(?), but that may be cost prohibitive. (e.g.: A fellow purchased 420 16mg tabs on-line for $300 which would normally cost me $24.95).

Perhaps the low-information dunces at the FDA need to be awakened from their sleep.

    Good luck, Hollyflo.

Thanks for the info! There is a Walgreens right across the street with a very accomodating pharmacist. I will wait a bit more being on the AV's now almost a month a likley switching from acyclovir to valacyclovir to see if I can recover my hearing more. When the fullness goes, so does the volume of tinnitus but if there is something to take to eliminate it, I would give it a try. When a headache comes up, the tinnitus is like nails on a chalkboard! Urg!
