Hello everyone I was recently diagnosed with Stage 2 hypertension. My PCP prescribed Lisinopril-HCTZ which is a combination diuretic and ACE inhibitor. My blood pressure has come down since starting the medication (went from a high of 178/120 a couple of weeks ago to 139/98 as of this morning) which I’m very happy about but I’ve had a terrible increase in my MM symptoms. The first few days after I started taking it I could barely get out of bed and I’m really not navigating too much better now. I’m constantly slightly dizzy and off balance and need to use my cane daily. I called my doctor and told her of the problems I’ve been having and she insisted I stay on the meds until my follow-up visit with her next week. Have any of you taken this medication (or something comparable) and had similar problems with your MM symptoms flaring up and if so did you eventually get used to the meds and start feeling our somewhat wonky version of “normal” again? Any input or experiences you’ve had would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Lulu
Sorry your feeling so poorly. I take bp meds but a beta blocker metoprolol and it never affected my MM. I hope your side effects are temporary.
I take Lisinopril for BP control as well, but I have not noticed any increase in symptoms, perhaps an increase in my tinnitus. But remember I have had a VNS. Sorry if that's not much help.
There are many kinds of bp meds. Maybe your dr will try a different kind. I wonder if you mm symptoms are acting up or these are side effects of the lisinopril. Either way, advocate for yourself with the dr.
Thank you for your replies and help Vicki, Chris and June.....much appreciated! I've been prescribed other BP meds like Dyazide in the past and did well with them but I've never taken an ACE inhibitor before. I'm thinking that must be what has me feeling so awful. The doctor wants me to tough it out for now since I have a long history of family members who've suffered strokes and heart attacks and she feels the side effects are less of a problem than the possible consequences to my health from having such high blood pressure. I guess we'll be having a chat on Wednesday when I go back for a follow-up to see if there's a substitute med that will work just as well but won't leave me feeling like this. Thanks again for your replies and I hope y'all have a great weekend! Lulu
I would recommend increasing your water intake. It is quite possible that you are dehydrated and/or your electrolytes are out of balance. It's worth a try! Good Luck.
Try some Gatorade. Maybe your body needs to adjust to the new medication, too. If you have a family history, your Dr. Is right to be concerned. This medication just may not be the right one. I hope you feel better soon. You're always so upbeat, I really enjoy your posts. It make me sad to hear that you're doing so poorly. I hope things get better soon!
I take both Lisinopril and Metoprolol. The Metoprotol also serves to calm essential tremor (a gift from my Dad). The Lisinopril was added only last year and I did have to adjust to the effects of the diuretic. It was only a few days of discomfort and I was back to normal. Hope you adjust to it soon! BP control is an important thing.
I take a beta blocker atenolol , which had to be increased in dosage because my pressure went nuts a few weeks ago , at first I was lightheaded and very tired , but am doing a bit better as days go by, maybe we have to adjust to a change.
