Antivirals and Cold Sores

I have been sick for over a week and I increased my acyclovir, no dizziness or vertigo so far, which I am sure I would have had if not for the acyclovir, because I would always get vertigo and many dizzy spells when I would get sick before I started taking them.

I felt better for 2 days but yesterday felt sick again, basically a bad cold, sneezing, congestion, fatigue, chills etc. Today I developed 2 cold sores on my lips even with the increased av dosage.

Which shows how when we are sick and our immune system is weakened the HSV can come out of its latent state and we need to increase the AV during this time.

I am surprised that I did developed the cold sores. But antivirals don't always suppress the virus good enough under certain circumstances.
I may increase by 2 pills given I developed the cold sores to prevent any vertigo attacks that may be lurking.

Vicki, could any of what you describe be a result of inadequate vitamin D?

Insufficient vitamin D can clearly weaken the immune system and allow colds, flues, cold sores, and other viral conditions to thrive.

You might be right..my last blood result for D was a couple of months ago and it was 34, I know from your posts and articles you have sited 50 is nifty. So being on the low end of normal might have something to do with it. I resumed taking my supplements more diligently since I came down with this cold that I can't seem to get rid of.
Now that the colder weather is coming and I will not get the sunlight I was during the summer, I am going to try and take my D supplement on a regular basis, I tend to get lax with it.

I think its by the same manufacturer as always but not sure the pills look the same with same imprints on them, unless all manufacturers make them look the same

Someone on this board said their generic did not work when they changed supplier.
    Just a stray thought.

It does seem like the amount you take should prevent cold sores but who knows. Could you be doing anything that makes them less effective? Arginine?

I absolutely have not been successful when they changed from the Northstar to Mylan labs for my a/v. Both times within 2 days my ear fullness is back and ringing. Prior to this though I have never worried or even thought about what lab - I thought it would always be the same. Clearly not always the case...for me...with this drug anyway.

Vicki - I hope you feel better soon!

I'm sorry you are feeling sick. You are one of our champions. We need you to be healthy. Speedy recovery for you.

I usually get a cold sore when I spend several hours in the sun. This summer I started the AV's and spent many hours in the sun and I never got a cold sore.
