If your doctor doesn't agree, perhaps try to find a different doctor - to at least give it a try. What truly frustrated me is that so many doctors I saw didn't see the value to even TRY the antivirals and rejected out of the gate. Yet my thought is that since THEY can't provide any good alternatives and the antivirals are a relatively harmless thing to try....why are they so against it? Still doesn't make sense to me. Last year during one of my more active stretches (mine always come in clusters) I had called the doctor and while she sympathized she also said "you know there isn't anything I can do to help".

I seem to be doing well on antivirals - and yes, the naysayers could say that it is just because this disease is so random in the episodes, I also know that I am having less issues since I started them.

    Good luck!

    Hi nicmgr,

Off to see my ENT in an hour armed with printout of Dr Gaceks paper and the exact prescribed amount of each label of AV's. Turns out that another member here lives in my area, has the same medical provider and found an ENT who is willing to run the trial; she is having good results and if my Dr poo poo's it, I will get referred there. The Dr says reduce stress and I intend to throw this back at her is she makes me trek across the bay for an in-house Dr that will help me!

Will update on post called: Acyclovir/valacyclovir Great for vertigo! What is great for aural fullness?

Johan - Stress is my number one trigger and can "overwhelm" the effect of the AV's. Setbacks are common but I think with the AV's setbacks become less severe and less frequent.

Well, Saturday evening it came - the attack. Have not had one for a couple of years.
I am out of work now and my father in law was just diagnosed with advanced lung cancer.
My wife is in chock of course. So I am worried about a lot of things.

Hi Vicki, my current Valtrex is from GSK, Glaxo Smithkline. Is there other better cheaper generic that I should try for?

Hi June, have you tried switching from a branded to a generic one before, does it work as good?

'cos my current GSK valtrex per 500mg pill is not cheap.

Johan, so sorry to hear about your current situation. I hope things go well for your father-in-law. For your recent developments with MM, don't be discouraged. I went years without the bad vertigo and then had one of the worst attacks in my 25 years of dealing with this. That was 5 years ago and I have not had severe vertigo since - just the dizzies on rare occasions. I started on JOH 5 years ago and that, I believe, is what led to my improved condition. Over the past several months I have been getting hit with the dizzies/seasick feeling so I started on the AV's a months ago.

The varying stages of this disease throughout the years make it very discouraging but one thing remains the same: you have to keep fighting it.

hey bud I pray you are on to something permanent I wasn't so lucky after about a month my symptoms melted away and I felt like again I had found he silver bullet felt great for about 3 months and symptoms returned many on this board remain near symptom free so keep the faith I was taking 2800 a day for months and finally dropped down to a few a day for good luck those virus cells have been around a lot longer than us and are slippery little bastards; play a hell of a game of hide and go seek with the a/v's God speed

I just managed to find a cheaper generic valacyclovir, and it is from Actavis, which is from the country of Iceland. Yet to purchase.

Any comments or reviews from anybody?

Those lists almost brought back my anorexia! Fear of food. I simply cannot follow that and the migraine diet and have any kind of life. So if the cost is a bit more ear distress, then so be it. I need to be free and eat healthy food for my entire body. This is where my good energy is coming from. I do not have vertigo and if I did, that might change my tune :-[

After a bad period in November and December my hearing came back just in time for Christmas.
I have had two good weeks. Tonight my ears are clogging up a bit though...
