Holly, you may want to try vanilla extract but it needs to be pure extract. I read about it on a MAV group and I know a few people it has helped MAV and migraines. NaturalNews) For many people, vanilla may be the key for eliminating headaches. Vanilla extract contains eugenol, an essential oil that has antiseptic and analgesic properties and that helps unclog blood vessels. The ancient Egyptians discovered that vanilla beans would cure a headache almost every time regardless of how serious the duration or intensity. Though they did not discover why vanilla worked, they found that it was three times more effective than their previous best treatment, turmeric. One headache sufferer reported that nothing had worked for his constant headaches of 40 years until he turned to vanilla. He drank a tablespoon of pure vanilla extract in 8 ounces of water before going to bed, and the next morning the usual headache pain was only half its normal intensity. Two days later it was gone completely and hasn't returned in over a year. http://www.naturalnews.com/031624_vanilla_headaches.html
Thanks Vicki. The way Dr Derebery explained it is that migraine is a central nervous system issue that may or may not result in headaches. She is encouraging me to try all 4 of the migraine prevention meds to interrupt the nervous system cycle because it will impact the auditory nerve and lessen the damage from ongoing MM symptoms. Headache abatement might not do this. I am currntly on the 3rd of 4 which is a beta blocker…very low dose…still feeling like a zombie but it can take up to a week for the side effects to subside. We shall see..the experiemnt goes on!
Just contacted Canadian Pharmacy. Geeting the generic version of the stuff I got from the House clinic at 1/3 price. Not sure yet if it is helping. Might be too soon to tell.. The zombies are less today from the beta blocker but the headache is back up :'(
Hi. Discovered the forums last night in a fit of despair. My ears are screaming right now and when I get a few moments to concentrate, I'm finding some great info here. Thank you all for that. I've been taking betahistine for a couple of years. 8MG's 6 times a day. Was making tinnitus tolerable until a few days ago. Doctor started me on an oral steroid tonight. Hopes to quiet the maddening roar back down to an acceptable level. I've had success with beta and hope the steroid is only a limited run show. *fingers crossed*
High-dosage betahistine dihydrochloride between 288 and 480 mg/day in patients with severe Menière's disease: a case series. Department of Neurology, Klinikum Grosshadern, Marchioninistrasse 15, 81377 Munich, Germany. The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical benefit and the side effects of high dosages of betahistine dihydrochloride (288-480 mg/day) in patients with severe Menière's disease (MD). In this case series 11 patients with MD who had not responded sufficiently to a dosage of 144 mg/day of betahistine dihydrochloride were treated on an individual basis with daily dosages between 288 and 480 mg of betahistine dihydrochloride. The number of attacks per month and the side effects were monitored. Non-parametric tests were used for statistical analysis. As a result, the frequency and the severity of vertigo were significantly reduced in all patients. The side effects were mild, self-limiting, and did not require any change in the treatment strategy. Despite the considerable limitations of an observational study--in particular in MD--high dosages of betahistine dihydrochloride between 288 and 480 mg/day seem to be effective in patients who do not sufficiently respond to lower dosages. Moreover, such dosages are well tolerated. http://www.mediafire.com/view/lpb0v991ew69v66/High-dosage_betahistine.pdf
Sorry, Shortone. I forgot to mention that High-dosage Betahistine Dihydrochloride works as well, or even better, on Tinnitus as it does on Meniere’s. At least, it did, in my case.
Wow! That's a whole lot more than I am being prescribed…16 mg 3x/day. The cost of 488 mg would be astronomical. Been on it for about three weeks and I think the fullness is better. Never had vertigo thank goddess!
I believe I've read that one can buy generic Betahistine from Canadian on-line pharmacies for about 1/3 the cost of brand name SERC. Well, something like that. Hopefully your medical care system will be more like Canada, England, etc., before long. Around mid-summer, once my $420 deductible is reached, the cost of 420 tabs/16MG Betahistine drops from $36 (60% paid by BC PharmaCare) to $0, until year's end. _______________________ High-dosage betahistine dihydrochloride between 288 and 480 mg/day in patients with severe Menière's disease: a case series. Yep three months supply of the generic serc on it's way from England for less than 1/3 of the cost of a US compounding pharmacy. Did get it online from Canadian Drugs. Now about 30 days on, I think it is one of the contributors of symptom relief!
