I have been wanting to taper off the valtrex. I tried going from three 1,000, to two and then one. When I hit the once a day we also were in the middle of monsoon season and a very high alert on allergens. I was also producing way too much mucus. I noticed my ear was feeling a little full so I went back to three times per day. Two days ago I was looking in the mirror and noticed my hair seemed thinner than usual. I am 61 and have had a thin spot for many years. But, this was more on top of my head. So, vanity got the best of me and I only took one valtrex each day for the last two days. I guess I will stay with one per day for awhile. I still haven't had vertigo since February 23 and my hearing is pretty good. My ear gets worn out from listening to music so I do insert a plug when I know I am going to be exposing my ear to loud music. I'm hoping I can maintain on one valtrex per day. If I have to take more and go bald, so be it. I will trade in my vanity and baldness for no vertigo and clear ear.
Hi Santa, I'm sure you have seen my thread about my hair thinning. Although 2 doctors think mine is hereditary I still am thinking its from acyclovir. FYI I have been on the lowest dose for suppression 800 mg a day for 1 year now and the low dose doesn't seem to prevent it. I hope it is different for you, but I feel the same way even being female, I will choose baldness But needless to say I am devastated over this. I am not using Rogaine I decided against it on the outside of the box it warns of chest pains..NO THANK YOU.
Thanks Vicki Yes, I was hoping the Rogaine was going to work for you. If it did I was going to apply some on a couple of bald spots on my back. ;D Just kidding. I don't think I will ever use it. Not on my head or back. My baldness could be hereditary, also. At least it's not making my beard thinner.
Maybe if this "trend" continues there will be a separate section on this board for baldy support. I will most likely be a member. LOL But if I have to choose (wish I didn't) I will choose no vertigo.
So all these years Carly Simon has actually been singing about YOU Santa and not Mick Jagger or Warren Beatty? Seriously though, I can understand your concern. Different meds I've taken over the years for MM and other health issues have caused my hair to thin. I suppose it's a trade-off though choosing to feel good over keeping what hair we have. For me, feeling good will win out every time. I figure I can always buy a wig if I have to. Best wishes to you that one Valtrex a day will keep the beast at bay!
I've been on acyclovir for over 2 years and I haven't noticed this. Just my bangs have thinned a bit but I think that's a part of the aging process or hereditary. I layered my head to achieve even more fullness and to play with different styles. I'm happy with it. I'm sorry you guys are having this problem but I guess if it were a choice between vertigo and hair loss, I would probably opt for no vertigo and buy a dozen wigs!
