Hi everyone. I used to be on this forum all the time, but have been doing so well since gent injections that I guess I drifted away. My menieres seems to be back, so I am back as well!! I had ME for quite a few years in my left ear, and once my hearing loss seemed to be permanent my ENT did a series of injections which totally took care of the vertigo, and to both his and the audiologist's surprise my hearing came back to almost 100%. That was about 5 years ago. In the last few months I have begun to have dizzy spells (very short and no vertigo), tinnitus and a profound hearing loss. These symptoms are in my left ear. Has anyone else had their ME symptoms return after successful Gent injections?
Gentimycin is an antibiotic that does not suppress herpes virus activity. The reappearance of Meniere's symptoms can happen when the underlying herpes virus resumes activity. Consider antiherpetic therapy: http://menieres.org/talk/index.php?topic=557.0 You may wish, also, to ponder my regimen: http://www.zoominternet.net/~kcshop/JOH.pdf --John of Ohio
I have to get new series of shots about every 6-9 months. That pesky vestibular nerve just doesn't want to die. After about 6 months I start getting that dizzy feeling again and then the mini-spins and eventually full blown vertigo. Usually at that point I go and get the shots again. 5 years is a very good run.
One of my problems is a lack of primary care doctors here and mine retired last year. Without a doctor I cannot get a referral back to the ENT so I am at a loss as to what to do. Hate to go to the ER with fairly mild symptoms to see if they will give me a referral. I have an appointment at a private clinic to at least get my hearing checked to see if they have any pull with the ENT.
I wish I never heard the word gentamicin I had 6 shots of it and 3 injections of it's more powerful cousin Streptomycin. I would just take my ear out and get on with life. It's pretty much been destroyed by the gentamicin already. Any little bad signal getting through can cause big problems. I would call a large teaching/research hospital in your area, they are usually affiliated with Universities.
