I found this article to be most intriguing. Perhaps someday most everyone with Meniere's may have a link to a common virus. http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2015/06/04/this-blood-test-can-tell-you-every-virus-youve-ever-had/
wow that's interesting! I think I will have that test done, it did not say where or how to get it done though. I am assuming the need is just 1 sample per person. "Elledge said the VirScan analysis currently can be performed for about $25 per blood sample, though labs could charge much more than that if the test becomes commercially available. He also said it currently takes two or three days to process and sequence about 100 samples, though that speed could increase as technology improves."
It would be interesting if everyone with MM had results proving they have HSV in their system. On the contrary what if some individuals have MM and tested negative for HSV? Maybe that would explain why anti-viral don't often work for some individuals. I took acyclovir (800mg/day) for about 5 years straight and stopped taking them about a year ago. They helped stop all attacks for years and were a miracle drug for me. Since I no longer have vertigo attacks and stopped anti-viral drugs I believe I'm in the final burn out stages of MM.
I think burnout means that vestibular sense in the diseased ear is shut down. Have you ever tested your vestibular sense by means of caloric test or VEMP?
CBS News said it will be available in one year. I am very interested in this test. My neurotologist doesn't believe there is a viral connection to MM. I have crohn's disease also.
It is probably an error to presume that Meniere's can be caused by a single, already-identified herpes virus. In fact, there are dozens of herpes viruses, with probably many more sub-types. It's wrong to conclude that Meniere's can be caused only by cold sore and other common viruses. The causative viruses may not even have been properly identified, and they may vary greatly from case to case, further complicating identifcation. But one this is common. All of the herpes viruses are suppressed by lysine and/or antiherpetic drugs. --John of Ohio
There are 8 human HSV's http://patient.info/doctor/human-herpes-viruses Herpesvirus types Human herpes virus •Herpes simplex type I (HHV-1) •Herpes simplex type II (HHV-2) •Varicella-zoster virus (VZV/HHV-3) •Epstein-Barr virus (EBV/HHV-4) •Cytomegalovirus (CMV/HHV-5) •Human herpesvirus type 6 (HBLV/HHV-6) •Human herpesvirus type 7 (HHV-7) •Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV/HHV-8)
Also I have been reading a lot about HSV and Crohn's and there is research about it too, some think HSV IBD and Crohn's Disease are linked http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=crohns+disease+and+hsv
