There is increasing evidence and belief that many cases of Meniere’s involve pathogenic inflammation. How this might be therapeutically dealt with is unclear. The standard approach would be to administer immunosuppressive drugs. The side effects of these are rather ominous. I continue to scrutinize complementary and alternative treatment approaches to a number of conditions that I have, including Meniere’s (which, thankfully, no longer burdens me with any symptoms after my chronic use of my Meniere’s treatment regimen: http://www.zoominternet.net/~kcshop/JOH.pdf ). There is now accumulating (but generally unrecognized) strong evidence that much or most human inflammatory conditions are made worse, poorly tolerated, or even caused by electron deficiency in the body. Before the mid-1900s, virtually all shoes had leather soles, which conduct electrical currents from the ground into the body. But in recent decades Western people have been electrically insulated from the earth. Insulating shoes, elevated beds on non-conductive wooden floors, and simply a general absence of ever touching the real earth’s surface for any length of time. In former decades, human body contact with the earth for lengthy periods each day occurred. No longer. In the absence of a normal, natural flow of electrons into the body by way of electrical contact with the earth, it is now known that several untoward physiological events occur. The lack of electrons in the body quickly causes red blood cells to clump together, markedly reducing their ability to transport oxygen through capillaries (as in our middle ears) to deep, microscopic tissues. Secondly, the lack of freely-available electrons markedly slows tissue healing, in a way too complex (but now well understood) to elaborate on here (read the research paper below). The immune system becomes dysfunctional. Instead of providing useful repair and pathogen suppression functions, the electron-deficient immune system turns upon normal body cells and tissue — exactly the reputed problem with an immune dysfunction in Meniere’s. Now don’t anyone go off the deep end on the comments I’m about to make. Before you comment, so some thorough research on the matter, and be able to present evidence-based contrary evidence. Feelings and perceptions have their place, but not in this discussion. There is now increasing evidence that most of the modern big diseases of concern were uncommon, when formerly we touched the bare earth each day at length. These include: diabetes, obesity (at least to some degree), Alzheimer’s and other geriatric neurodegenerative conditions), cardiovascular diseases; and perhaps autism and other developmental neurological deficiencies. Every one of these have become prominent just as we, literally, lost touch with the earth. Every one of these have inflammation components that may be the root factor in their development. For a non-Meniere’s condition I have (which I won’t divulge just yet), I’ve tried dosing on free electrons from the earth for just two days; and the results have been just astounding. I’m a competent handyman and know my physics. 35 years ago I installed the electrical wiring in my house, all per applicable code. I therefore knew (but did the electrical pre-checks) that the grounding circuits on each of my in-the-wall electrical circuits were proper, with a direct connection to the soil outside my house through the 8-ft grounding rod at my electrical circuit board in the basement. I then connected an 8-ft length of bare copper grounding wire (12-gauge) to the grounded receptacle (“plug”) at my desk. For the last two days, while I work at my computer I tucked the end of this bare wire next to my belly skin, under my belt and pants, making a direct electrical contact to the earth. The results, after just two days of this? I feel very much better, and the symptoms of my non-Meniere’s condition I wanted to address have simply disappeared. But, Ok, what does any of this have to do with Meniere’s Disease, the central topic of this entire website? Perhaps, not much at all. Or, perhaps, a great deal. If the inflammation causing Meniere’s symptoms can be suppressed or alleviated by simply grounding the body to the earth, the cost and inconvenience of such an approach would be minimal. Now don’t in any way misquote or misrepresent me. I am in no way claiming that connecting your body to the earth will necessarily reduce or prevent any Meniere’s symptom. I am merely stating that if inflammation is a major player in Meniere’s, it is worthwhile to consider the possibility that electrically connecting yourself to the earth might reduce or eliminate this inflammation, with very positive results. For those who want to do the research, scan the Internet for information on “grounding” or (as they say in the UK) “earthing.” A recent major medical paper on the topic is here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4378297/ Unless you are adequately knowledgeable in household electrical circuits, proper grounding wires, etc., do jump out and start wiring yourself to any receptacle. There are a number of Internet videos on how to construct and use household grounding devices. A number are for sale (at what I believe to be too-high prices). Lastly, it would be unreasonable to presume that symptomatic relief might occur promptly. If tissues have been damaged by inflammation, it could take some time for those tissues to re-grow or repair. My two-day positive response was rather atypical, I would think. –John of Ohio
Would using a tens unit accomplish the same thing? I use it all the time for my back. Takes away my pain after 1 session. If you are not familiar with a tens unit: What is a Tens Unit? TENS stands for (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation). which are predominately used for nerve related pain conditions (acute and chronic conditions). TENS machines works by sending stimulating pulses across the surface of the skin and along the nerve strands. The stimulating pulses help prevent pain signals from reaching the brain.Tens devices also help stimulate your body to produce higher levels of its own natural painkillers, called "Endorphins".
How Does A Tens Unit Work? Tens units have different adjustable settings to control amplitude (intensity) of stimulation by controlling the voltage. Current, and pulse width (duration) of each pulse. Electrodes are placed at specific sites on a user’s body depending on the physical location of their pain. The current travels through electrodes and into the skin stimulating specific nerve pathways to produce a tingling or massaging sensation that reduces the perception of pain.
Vicki, Good question. I don't think TENS therapy is equivalent, for this reason. As I understand it, TENS therapy requires the application of at least two electrodes onto the skin. A direct current (low) is then passed through the wires, entering the body at one electrode, and exiting and completing the circuit back out through the other, oppositely-charged electrode. In TENS, the electrons make a complete circuit into and then back out of the body. While doing this, the give up some of their energy to targeted nerves or muscles. But not so with grounding. In this case it's all unidirectional, with electrons leaving the earth (or ground) and entering and staying then in the body. And the voltage and amperage of grounding is very low, having no effects on muscle contraction or inducing pain or discomfort. In grounding, the electrons have to enter the body and stay there. That's why there is only one wire, the grounding wire, against the body. Electrons produced by lightening around the world (there are 5000 lightning strikes around the wold every minute) are then able to enter the body through the grounding wire, and then stay in the body, where they support normal blood viscosity, proper immune system function, and other normal processes. --John of Ohio
tens units feels like an electrical massage, its not to inflict pain or discomfort, you dial up the current to the point it feels good but not painful. But I understand the difference you pointed out in that the current is directed in a circuit in a tens unit as opposed to grounding which is 1 wire and not directional.
This is a subject I have long been interested and wholeheartedly believe there is something in it. I try to have skin to earth contact whenever possible but might try some grounding for those time I'm stuck inside during winter (which it is now in Australia). Now I think of it...my Vestibular Migraines are much worse in cold weather and it's just occurred to me that this could be because I am inside so much.
Here's an account of someone who got relief from migraine headaches using grounding: http://blog.paradigm-sys.com/396/ --John of Ohio
Very interesting, thanks for the link. After reading your post, I went looking for grounding products (as I'm not technically minded at all) and they are all very expensive. However if they have potential to help, then I was considering which product to buy, out of the bed sheets or mats. My husband has daily headaches and lives on painkillers, so am thinking the bedsheet might benefit us both. Of course I'll need the most expensive one as we have a king sized bed! The mystery of Vestibular Migraines is that there are apparently dozens of potential so-called triggers and after 15 years of suffering and trying literally everything under the sun, have just about given up. Something is causing my balance problems though and if a grounding sheet might help, then it's a small price to pay. I recently went on a seven day cruise and had NO balance issues, despite being on a pitching ship. Perhaps I was somehow being grounded on the ship, surrounded by the ocean and swimming daily in seawater.
I must admit I'd never heard of grounding or earthing before but I find this fascinating. I went to Florida many years ago (after being diagnosed with MM) and spent almost the entire time barefoot walking the beach and wading in the Gulf and I felt better during my time there than I had in a long while. I may have to investigate this further and at the very least try to take a daily walk around my yard sans shoes. Thank you for sharing this, John.
In traditonal healing and energy work, including things like Tai Chi and Chi Gong, grounding to the earth is considered an elemental beginning..pun intended…of any healing or transformation. Having done deep tissue massage for 15 years, I can say working barefoot and being that way on the ground was the best way to ground energies for sure. The most advanced healers I've studied with will always point to the feet where there is head distress. Besides our disconnect from the earth with modern life, we are more and more barrraged with EMF's…electromagnetic fields…from cell phones, TV's, microwaves etc more fully scrambling already unbalanced electrical energy flow. We are after all water and electronic beings if one studies the current medical science along with quantum physics. I would add too that many of us are also disconnected from out emotions living primarily from mental concepts pooling excessive energy in the cranial cavity which has many repercussions. John I think this is why allopathic medicine misses many of the causes and cures for Meniere's. I totally agree you are onto something and wanted to add more factors that might be at play in addition to what you pointed out.
John, Can I electrically connect myself to earth and take vinpocetine and lemon biflavonoids at the same time? Or is that an accident waiting to happen? I'll be in Florida fishing first week of July and need advice
If being electrically connected to the earth while taking vinpocetine or lemon bioflavonoids, everyone who has taken those and walked barefoot in the lawn would have had problems. Specifically, how do you intend to electrically connect yourself to the earth? Walking barefoot is the easiest, cheapest, safest way. But since I spend (too) much time at my desk, I ground my body by a bare 12-gauge copper grounding wire that has one end (SAFELY --- After I dully checked the circuit with the proper meter) connected to the ground wire in a receptacle box, and the other end tucked next to my belly skin beneath my belt and trousers. (I don't recommend that unless you know the details of how your house wiring is grounded, and have used a proper grounding indicator to affirm a straight wire run from the receptacle box to the proper 8-ft grounding rod near your house circuit box.) But no, grounding has no effect on drugs or supplements or foods, etc. If you fish from an aluminum boat, you will be thoroughly grounded to the water. But if you fish in water wearing hip boots, the rubber insulates you from the earth. No electrons could then pass from the earth (or its water) into your body. Do an Internet search on proper grounding for health. --John of Ohio
I went for a Reiki session the other day and one of the thing she said to me exactly was " You MUST connect more with the earth.... in order to help keep your symptoms at bay .... and by that that mean literally taking your shoes off and walking barefoot thru the grass as much as you can or walking barefoot outside - go to the park - go for a walk - whatever it is" So - Idk how many of you believe in Reiki - but - I just had a "Holy Sh*t" moment with this post .
