Author, neuroscientist, & philosopher, Sam Harris, reflects on his tinnitus & recent vestibular diagnoses in “Adventures in the Land of Illness”.
That is a very interesting read! It is ironic (funny?) that he has just finished publishing a book about meditation. I get the sense from the last paragraph that his defense of meditation would be a bit weaker now. Wait 'til he gets his first real vertigo attack!
The body is like a clock—and it is a perverse one. It is by growing less and less reliable that it signals the passage of time. That line is so true. Love the analogy.
It is & I’m glad you enjoyed it. Similar thoughts came to mind also. Though regardless of possible progression, given time to familiarize himself with his symptoms & the degree of subsequent worry, anxiety, self-doubt, self-criticism & possible depression ramified & induced by his vestibular symptoms, I’m confident Sam will continue to promote, defend & reap the rewards of meditation. I’ll go so far as to say that symptomatic progression may further encourage his desire to both practice & encourage meditative techniques which clear the mind to better his ability to overcome emotional challenges, as he's not the type to be easily intimidated.
