For those who have MAV, do you continue with a diuretic? I understand you have to figure out your triggers but I'm nut sure about continuing a diuretic. Thanks!!
I'm just on a low-sodium diet because I can't take diuretics. I just started the low-sodium deal last week, and I haven't seen a difference in my symptoms yet. I also have a problem with fainting (neurocardiogenic syncope), and diuretics push me into a fainting spell. Such fun. I wonder if diuretics help others with Meniere's.
I have menieres and migraines, never sure if the vertigo is from MAV or mm or a combo. I haven't tried diuretics because I have fatigue and low blood pressure. I try to stick with low salt. My fatigue doctor tried me on a high salt diet to improve my energy - I wound up with my worst vertigo episode. I was vertigo free for a couple of years until a few weeks ago. Now I'm trying dr. Buccholz (sp?) Heal your Headache approach to see if I can at least reduce any migraine triggers.
I stopped diuretics because I realised that I had mav and menieres but mainly mav. I think that diuretics are prescribed for menieres. Anway I didn't miss the diuretic after stopping it and buchholz worked to control my mav triggers.
What is the rationale behind taking a diuretic for MAV? Some have said it exacerbates their migraines due to dehydration and/or electrolyte imbalance.
Dizzybee, Does the diuretic seem to help YOUR symptoms? Do you have less frequent or milder attacks when taking diuretics? Some do, some don't. This is a thing where theory seems to be much less useful than experience.
I started taking the diuretic because of the initial Meniere's diagnosis. Recently i was diagnosed as having daily migraine by a different doctor. Wondering if i should continue with the diuretic because of the change in diagnosis. None of my doctors have addressed that but i see my neurologist (the one who diagnosed the migraines) in a couple of weeks and I'll get his opinion. It could be making my particular symptoms worse. I was just asking because i know there are some MAVers here.
Dizzybee, I just got hold of my otoneurologist's letter to my GP, where she explained things better than she did to me in person. She thinks I may have both migraine and Meniere's, talked about 'migraine vestibulopathy', and said that migraine and Meniere's can interact/overlap with each other. I certainly can have migraine alone (without vertigo), but I think whenever my vertigo attacks happen I'm also experiencing migraines, so maybe a common trigger(s) or process going on. I doubt that answers your question about whether diuretics will help you, but maybe it helps to know that you can, indeed, have both diagnoses.
Yes, but I don’t know why – probably a mixture of fear, and watchful contentment that the current chemical soup provided by Serc, Diuretic, Pizotifen, and ACV (but currently trialling Valtrex), seems to be working. I also take some JOH legacy supplements – Vit C and Ginkgo. But who knows with such an idiopathic and idiosyncratic illness?
personally I wouldn't take a diuretic for either, they can cause real problems but I never heard of a diuretic for MAV I don't see what purpose it would serve.
Vicki ACV = Acyclovir Pizotifen is migraine medication (Google is your friend). I have MM. I also have MAV undertones or overtones. Since this is a Meniere’s forum I assumed that the OP question related to someone with MM and MAV, but on re-reading it I may have that wrong.
dizzybee diuretics do not help MAV afaik. But finding your food triggers and avoiding them may help your MAV symptoms a lot. Some people, as myself, can control my MAV symptoms by just avoiding my trigger foods. Some MAV and MM trigger foods overlap.
