I do, my whole life and now that I'm older and most of my teeth are 3/4 fillings, my teeth are breaking. I had another tooth pulled last week and yesterday started to have another toothache from a different tooth. I have had so many roots canals, oral surgery, extractions etc during my life that I was wondering if Meniere's is somehow related to more than average dental issues.
Funny you should mention it. I had tooth implant removed last Friday, had worst vertigo in 2 years Sunday and after that steady improvement and now doing extremely well. This implant has bothered me some for 6 years that it was there. Priorto that it was badly done root canal and also hurt for a few years. I have 5 other root canals and overall bad teeth for a long time. I personally believe this is a big causitive factor Meniere's. This implant was on same side as bad ear, I am having the greatest week after the removal, I pray everyday that it does not stop. I am taking zero drugs this week including no ativan/Xanax which I apparently was partially addicted, and I am only taking Vit D3, garlic oil caps and Vitc complex. I am missing 2 molars now and will likely do bridges only (never again implant upper), but am afraid now about the bridges since I am doing so well. Who else has bad teeth? Please let us know. It could be just a mild pain after you eat that you ignore. Xrays don't always show and dentists no longer examine teeth like the old days, they are all lazy and thinking about the next car/house they will buy.
DW - happy for your improvement! Hopefully that was your reason and now it's gone. I have had several cavities and one root canal, same side as menieres ear BUT had it done after mm started. By 3 yrs or so.
A good majority of my teeth are filled with mercury fillings and several crowns. Fortunately, in the past few years, I have not had any dental work done. My meniere's was diagnosed in 2012 but I had ear pressure and hearing loss for several years before that. My symptoms have gotten significantly worse since 2013. I am convinced either the mercury and/or jaw issues contribute to my meniere's symptoms. I went to a holistic doctor who recommended having all of my mercury fillings removed, but of course, there are no guarantees that my symptoms would lessen. I have never had TMJ or jaw problems, but I do grind my teeth. I have seen two dentists who recommend that I get an orthodic appliance. Of course, one dentist wants to do the whole nine yards. Top and bottom orthodic appliances and then braces. The other wants to do a top orthodic only. They can't guarantee anything either, but it is something that I am looking into. Dental work is so expensive and not covered by insurance, so I have to pick and choose what I think may help. Everything about this disease is frustrating and difficult. I feel like I am throwing money at various treatments praying something will make a difference
Dwayne, one of my teeth that were extracted recently is an upper front tooth, not the very front but one next to it. Everyone said get an implant. I had a very strong feeling doing that would cause me a lot of MM grief. SO I went a different route. What you are saying about the implant was my fear about doing it. So far it seems like dental issues and MM are connected.
I have had a lot of trauma to my mouth—four teeth pulled for braces and four impacted wisdom teeth yanked out (I swear they used a crowbar). My jaws pop like crazy, so I have TMJ, but I don’t clench or grind. I went to a dentist about my TMJ and the connection between it and my ear symptoms. My dentist made me a splint and I wore it for seven months. It did not help my symptoms. Lately I’ve noticed that I chew primarily on my right side, and my right ear is the worst. I definitely think there is a connection but don’t know how to address it.
I recently discovered my dizziness wasn't MAV but probably TMJ. Thanks to a wonderful Facebook group I found out about on this forum, I am having treatment from a neuromuscular dentist which seems to be helping. I also have had teeth removed, which affected my bite, putting pressure on my TM joints and causing dizziness. I can't have implants as I don't have enough bone meaning I'd need a bone graft done. No thanks! The lady running the FB group had menieres and hearing loss for over 20 years. She was talking about it at a function and a specialist dentist overheard her and said he could help. Well he did, and this lady's aim now,is to "pay it forward" and try help others.
I have also started wearing my custom bruxism guard at night this week. I had had it made and previously resisted wearing it.
JanLyn...was the dentist a neuromuscular one who has trained at the Las Vegas Institute? They specialise in TMJ and make splints that can be adjusted over time, repositioning the jaw. They also treat the muscles using a TENS machine and through physio. After seeing a neorumuscular dentist, I found my TMJ and jaw position had affected my airways, narrowing it to 2mm when it should be 12-14mm wide. This was confirmed through a CT scan. This caused me to suffer from sleep apnea, even though I am not overweight, nor drink or smoke. I finally knew why I am always so tired!
onehorse, I'm so glad that you and your dentist figured out your airway issue. No, my dentist was a regular one, not a neuromuscular one. I probably would have to go to a big city to find one. I wish there was one in my area because I think the TENS and massage could help me.
TMJ has been a big problem for me at times. I wear a night splint and it helps but the past couple of weeks my jaw is really sore and popping again. I've wondered also if it affects my dizziness as the TMJ is on same side as my bad ear. It's interesting how so many of us have similar symptoms and problems that aren't normally considered related to Meniere's.
Good thread! I've often wondered if having bad teeth contributed to my Meniere's, as I've had bad teeth since I was a child. I've got several missing now as they had to be pulled, still got a dozen crowns and Lord knows how many cavities. Have been seriously considering have them ALL removed and just getting some wooden ones like 'Ol George, but then I hate splinters in my tongue, so they'll probably be made of some newfangled composite. Had a bad toothache one time while driving long haul. Was in Mississippi, and was in uber-severe pain. Dispatcher gave me a load to Ontario, Ca, and then I swapped for another load coming to Seattle. Between Mississippi and Seattle I *might* have gotten 8 hrs. sleep..in 1 hr. bits here and there. Tooth went septic, and I spent 4 days in the ICU..it damn near killed me. Teeth suck!
My meniere's symptoms started not long after three crowns and then a root canal (due to crown failure within weeks). It was almost 2 years though before actual vertigo attack.
It does seem dental problems and Meniere's are linked. Maybe the infection started in the teeth and traveled to the inner ear somehow. I had tons of fillings done before my first MM attack at 13. My mom would take me to the dentist every 3 months and each time I would have between 10-30 cavities. I think that dentist was a crook IMO how could I have so many cavities for so many years. So most of my teeth are 3/4 fillings, root canals and crowns or by now extracted. BTW I have another tooth ache (had 2 teeth extracted within the last month) and Saturday will get 2 more extracted, I will not go through root canal anymore.
Wow Vicki, maybe it's time to go with full dentures. My husband said it was the best decision he could have made after years of dental problems. Good luck on Saturday.
I had bad teeth growing up. Baby teeth had to be capped because they were weak and crumbled. Lots of cavities. My back molars had DEEP cavities and fillings. One thing to mention - when I had an ache recently I called my dentist and she said that if cold or pressure doesn't make the tooth worse it most likely is not a cavity. She said that most likely I was grinding my teeth when I sleep and suggested an over-the-counter mouth guard. Also if my sinus pressure is way up I will have tooth aches not related to dental.
