I am hoping for some advice from Canadian members, more specifically, Albertans. I have had menieres forever, but the vertigo (my worst symptom) has been on hiatus until recently. I have been on serc which I thought was controlling vertigo, but in the past couple of months the vertigo is sneaking back. My GP has decided I need to see a specialist. He has given me the choice of either one in Edmonton or Calgary. I do not like driving in either one of these cities, especially in winter. If I have to go through with driving , I would like to see the better of the 2. My GP won't tell me which that is. I know it's a shot in the dark, but has anyone here seen the main specialists in these two cities? If so any insight. Recommendations? I need to make up my mind before Wednesday so my GP can get the referral in. Any advice would be appreciated. I need to get the vertigo gone! Maggie
You could try the Facebook Group Menieres:stay positive. It is a closed group but they will accept you if you request. I have seen several members from Canada that frequent the site and may be able to help you.
Try look thru the archive database - believe there is a list of doctors there. And there may be more info from the old board.
Maggie I found this resource on meneiresinfo.com good suggestions on how to find a doctor familiar with Meniere's http://www.menieresinfo.com/doctors.html#find-doctor-via-pubmed Section 4: PubMed as a Resource to Find a Doctor PubMed is a resource of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Library of Medicine (NLM). It contains literally millions of abstracts of medical journal articles. •You might use PubMed to find a physician who has written a published article about Meniere's Disease or on some particular aspect of Meniere's Disease. •You might also use PubMed to find a physician who has written on Meniere's Disease and who practices in your community. •For example, if you are looking for a doctor who is in Montreal, you might search PubMed for "meniere's AND montreal." (The "AND" must be in all caps to be recognized as a connector.) (Like this.) •Try different searches. A search for "meniere's AND alabama" will miss some articles that will be found by searching for "meniere's AND birmingham." Vestibular Disorders Association (VEDA). VEDA has resource lists of doctors and other professionals "with an expressed interest in vestibular disorders" (not Meniere's Disease specifically, but not excluding Meniere's Disease either).
Thanks nicmger and vicki, I appreciate the time you took to find a possible solution. I was originally hoping to get in touch with someone from my area who had seen either of the 2 doctors whom I need to choose from. I see now that was a pipe dream. Time to cowgirl up, pick a doc and get referred. Thanks to all who helped. Maggie
Two years too late but howdy Maggie!! I’m in Calgary and saw dr beth Lange I think in 2014. She confirmed my diagnosis of Menieres with probably some Migraine element also. She suggested 3 meds to discuss with my family doc - 2 of them are contraindicated in me for other medical issues. The 3rd, epically, I am just not keen on. She told me if it got worse she would do a gentamicin injection in my ear. I guess if you need a diagnosis or surgery, she’s your gal in Calgary. Sorry I wasn’t able to help you when you were looking. When I’m sick with it, I can’t tolerate the computer. And when I’m well, I don’t want to think about it! I was good for a few years, but have had a rough few months this year so I’m back in desperate research mode. So how has it gone for you? Who did you see? Are you still in Alberta? If you are in Calgary and want to try acupuncture I’ve got a good o e.
More info for Canadians. My sister is a physiotherapist, and tells me that the vestibular Physiotherapy guru (tons of experience, teaches a lot) is Bernard Tonks in Victoria, BC. I also came across an audiologist in Vancouver BC who does balance testing including VNG, VEMP etc. I assume it’s private and therefore less of a wait compared to the regular ENT wait lists. In Alberta - Calgary- Dr Beth Lange is likely retired (recent indefinite medical leave). Dr. Euna Hwang is at Neurovestibular Clinic, South Health Campus (which has VNG etc but long wait). She says there is more of this sort of medicine in Edmonton.
