I have been on Valtrex for 2 months. I am still not sure if it is helping that much but will continue for the next 6 months. I have not had the success that many of you have had....I still get vertigo but it has not been as frequent. I reduced my dose to 1,000 mg this week, but I have had a set back so I am upping back to 2,000 mg for a few more weeks. I know many of you will recommend me going back up to 3,000 mg per day, but I did not notice any difference between the 2,000 or 3,000 dosage.

My main issues right now are Hyperacusis, tinnitus and fullness. My bad ear is so so sensitive to sounds (which is crazy since I can't hear our of that ear). It is so hard to be social because when I wear an ear plug, I feel off balance and it can cause a vertigo attack. I am trying to figure out what supplements or prescriptions may help with this by opening up the inner ear circulation?

This week, I started the JOH Lemon Bioflavinoids - 1 capsule per day. I was thinking of also adding the other JOH components but I am very sensitive to supplements and prescriptions and will have to start very slowly.
I then wondered whether betahistine (compounded) would be similar to taking the JOH regime? My doctor prescribed it several years back. I took it for a time but did not really give it a good try and really don't remember the results. Do you find the betahistine is sufficient to mimic those JOH supplements e.g. lemon bioflavonids, vinpocetine, gingko that help with inner ear circulation? John of Ohio -what are your thoughts?

If any of you do take betahistine, I would appreciate it if you would share your dosage and results.

You guys are great and I thank you in advance for all of your input :)

I have been taking betahistine for one and a half years. Since November I have been taking 32mg 3 times a day . I have also been following JoH regimen for about 3 weeks. Betahistine is meant to improve inner ear circulation but to be honest I cannot see any difference at all. A few days ago I stopped taking it and I had an attack. It could have been just a coincidence as I get 3-4 attacks a week anyway. However I got back to 32 mg. I am seeing my ENT next week and I will ask him about dosage.as for JoH regimen, I want to believe in it and I look forward to seeing the results!

I believe that betahistine 16mg x 3 works for me in providing symptomatic relief, without ever eliminating vertigo attacks totally. I tried JOH religiously for 6 months but did not notice a shred of improvement. Oh how I do not miss those massive L-lysine pills that I had to set the alarm clock for so as to take on an empty stomach 30 minutes before breakfast!! :(

But everyone is different. It apparently works for 80% of combatants.

    Several thoughts.

First, other than complete excision (cutting out) of the inner ear (labryinthectomy), no Meniere’s treatment brings quick or instant relief from symptoms. It takes weeks or months for inner ear tissues to heal. This is particularly true of tinnitus. Those noises can last many months or a year or more after every other symptom has been abated. Do not expect any quick or complete relief with any of the things you listed or might take. It will take time. Persist.

Increasing inner ear circulation is well understood by most ENTs (except those in the US, who generally think there is simply nothing that can be done for Meniere’s other than steroid injections or surgical procedures). SERC is a Meniere’s treatment of choice in Canada, the UK, and most of Europe — because it increases circulation through inner ear tissues, helping to drain or reduce fluid accumulations.

But there are other substances that will also increase circulation, but by different (even more effective) mechanisms. The eriocitrin in lemon bioflavonoids facilitates permeability through capillaries, increasing fluid exchange. Vinpocetine appears to increase blood flow through capillaries, and increases oxygen exchange. Ginkgo extract likewise increases circulation, but by mechanism different from the above.

It is the compounding mixture of circulation improvements that gives my regimen an advantage of the other single-element treatments. Each of my regimen components, by themselves, may provide only a fraction of relief. But together, cooperatively, they have the best chance to provide substantial symptomatic relief.

But, again, it will take weeks or months (in most cases) for full relief to appear. This is not like taking an aspirin for a headache, by any means. Two, slow-acting processes need to occur. The lysine (or prescribed antiherpetic drug, such as acyclovir) needs time to stop herpes virus replication. That is a slow, weeks- or months-long process.

At the same time, the body needs time to heal tissues damaged by inflammation. That, too, doesn’t happen over night.

There is no contradiction between antiherpetics, SERC, and the components of my regimen. They can all be taken together.

Because you are sensitive to “supplements,” it would be best to add a new one every few days or a week or so, to detect any systemic disagreeableness.

Keep us posted on your progress.

    Yellow,

Did you take only the lysine in my regimen, or all of its components? If you took all of them, I'll add your account to my "failures" list.

    Hi John

For religiously, read all of the components, in all of the right doses, at all of the right times! :D

As a legacy of the JOH experiment I do still take Ginkgo and Vit C just for old times sake The lysine has been substituted with ACV, in addition to which I take a diuretic and Pizotifen for a suspicion of additional MAV symptoms. This particular chemical cocktail seems to be working, unless it is a period of spontaneous remission skewing the results.

I remain salt aware, and generally avoid fresh bread being suspicious of the yeast content.

    Keep up the good work.

    Doesn't that qualify as helping?

Why?? Stay at the highest dose until you get real relief.

Doesn't a "set back" imply that you were making some gains?

Up it to 3000 mg. That's the recommended dose until you find relief.

You can't make that call until you take it properly.

Are you taking benzos? They are known to cause hyperacusis.

Seriously, man. You can't stop taking valtrex until you've given it a chance. Many of us have found that the benefits max out after 6 months at high dose. I personally thought i was getting relief at 1 month, but had no idea how much more relief i would get after 1 year. I feel incredible now.

Give it a chance. Take the max dose for 6 months before giving up on it. I mean, it's an almost harmless drug with almost no side effects. What do you have to lose?

Thanks Scott Tom. I agree. I did up my dose to 3,000 mg per day. You are right.....I need to give it the full 6 months to really see if it is working. I really appreciate your advice!
