What JOH supplements (and other ones) do I need to stop prior to surgery?

    Hi everyone,

Haven't been here for awhile (HappyGrace on old board-changed it on the new board). Hope everyone is doing well and staying as dizzy-free as possible!
I started getting vertigo again so my doctors agree it's time for ear surgery (sac). I need to stop supplements 2 weeks out from surgery. I'm on the full JOH, high dose Vitamin C, coQ10, curcumin, St. John's Wort, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, and dandelion root tea as a diuretic. I'm hoping to stay on any of them, if possible. Does anyone know which ones need to be stopped before surgery, PARTICULARLY the JOH ones? Also, should any of them be tapered, or do I just stop everything cold turkey 2 wks before? (I will definitely taper the C-I take about 8000 mg/day now-if you have any idea of how quickly or slowly I should taper the C, I'd love to know that too!)
    Thanks!

Any of the supplements that improve blood flow such as the lemon bioflavonoids and the vinpocetine. You should give your doctor (surgeon) the full list of medications, vitamins and supplements. They would best know which ones to stop taking.

UPDATE: I found by googling that these are a no-no too-fish oil, Vit E, ginko, CoQ10, St. John's Wort, curcumin, lysine, glucosamine/condroitin/MSM

So basically I need to stop everything! Next question: Do I need to taper any of these, or just stop them all cold turkey 2 wks before? I'm asking because I take quite a bit of all of them. (4000 mg Lysine, etc.)

    (Thanks, nwspin!)

I just stopped them cold turkey but you might want to contact his office to make sure.

Definitely check with your Dr before weaning off or stopping. I would not stop cold turkey.

Thanks-I made up a little calendar for myself so I can taper down.

Just out of curiosity, why do you have to stop taking supplements prior to surgery? Just wondering.

Any supplements or medications that act as a blood thinner needs to be stopped otherwise there is a chance of uncontrolled bleeding during the surgery.

rrmehta-after the surgery, I want to continue taking them to help protect my good ear. Also, I do think they are helping somewhat for the bad ear.
