On a recent thread, mjpmin said there are lots of threads on here on how to protect our good ear but I can't find them.

Can anyone please link me, or list ways you know to protect the good (non-MM) ear?

    Thanks!

You can search old forums for that, the link to the archives would take you there. I would think if you want to protect it from a virus to take Lysine. Also protect it from loud noises.

Hasn't the Acyclovir helped maintain your hearing? I ask because I'm bilateral but my hearing has not worsened while on the Acyclovir. I still take it though. Twice a day for now as a maintenance dose. 400 mg. or if I'm feeling off due to weather or stress I can take three a day. Still my hearing in both ears has not deteriorated.

    Thanks, Vicki!

Bumblebea-No, unfortunately the Valtrex has not maintained my hearing in the bad ear. I've been on it (high dose) since Sept last yr and have continued to lose hearing in that ear, so with that plus the return of vertigo, the doctor believes the AV is not working for me and I have surgery scheduled for the bad ear next month.

I want to do everything I can to protect my good ear though! I will likely continue on a maintenance dose of antiviral for the good ear after surgery. It's great that your hearing has been maintained!!

BumbleBea, did you have viral type of symptoms? Dr. Lange asked me about recent viral illnesses (none). I didn't get a chance to ask her about trial of antivirals.

Grace, I guess using earplugs around noisy events. I have noise-damage pattern of mild hearing loss on my "good" side. I'm not sure if it is a precursor to more Meniere's, or from loud music at exercise classes, iPod, and I used to shoot guns for awhile back in my 20's.

Hey, to protect your ears 24/7 I don't have that much experience with, however I invested in some custom made ear plugs as I go to concerts frequently and my ears are alright.

I had to come with terms if I felt it was too loud no matter where I was I had to leave (apart from being on a plane :( )

Just found out the hearing on my bad side is way down after this last cluster of vertigo attacks. :( My left ear is good except some noise-damage pattern loss. It also has tinnitus now, so I am definitely worried about going bilateral and being completely deaf. Dr. Lange said that the hearing loss on the right is so severe, it is very unlikely to come back. She did not mention any meds or herbals that might help, but then she is a surgeon.

Should I ask my Family Doc for some antivirals, even though I haven't had any viral symptoms??? Try Lysine or Vinpocetine? CoQ10 gets my heart racing, but I do tolerate Magnesium and Vitamin C.

I just got an app for my iPhone, Decibel Meter Pro ($0.99), to measure noise. I found a website www.dangerousdecibels or something like that, that gives noise guidelines.

Yes to the antivirals. There are no 'other' symptoms and no tests that tell if you need them. If you have healthy kidneys and liver they are 'very well tolerated' and trying them is the only way to know if they will help.
