Hello there friends. I was a member of this group over 13 years ago when I was trying to find help and relief for my husband (a Meniere's sufferer). He finally got a doctor to prescribe him Acyclovir, and his life changed forever (up to this date anyway). He has not had any dizziness nor vertigo in years that I'm aware of (we actually divorced a couple years ago). Now I find myself with a new friend at work who has begun having terrible symptoms and I find myself here again. You all were so helpful back then, and I know can help me (and my friend) again. If you could refresh my memory, what is the amount of sodium one should limit to? I know this is one of the first things the doctors said to do 13 years ago. Are they still saying that?!? Is Acyclovir or Valtrex still difficult to get prescribed in the proper dosage?? My friend has yet to see a specialist about this, but I'm encouraging him to do so ASAP. His regular doctor put him on allergy medicine but that's it. He doesn't even think he has allergies, and it hasn't helped. Here are his symptoms as he explained to me: Ringing in both ears (for years now) Some hearing loss (bi-lateral) Dizziness (some days constant) Vertigo (began a couple years ago. Several episodes over the past few months, with more frequency the past couple weeks) Eyes crossing at times Occasional numbness in lips and mouth If any of you has any insight or input as to what my friend is experiencing or what he might try, I'd be forever grateful. I had hoped that answers might be easier to come by than they were 13 years ago, but I don't know. I just know that I was able to find the answer to help my (then) husband, and I am determined to do the same for this friend! Thanks to you all in advance and I hope for relief for you all as well.
Salt intake is debatable. I eat whatever i want. Others have different stories. Valtrex is preferable over acyclovir. Tell her to take 3000 mg daily for at least 6 months or until relief kicks in. Then taper down to 1000 mg if possible. Some folks have to keep a higher maintenance dose. Take Gacek's paper to the doc and it helps. Any doc can prescribe it, and some folks on here have gotten it online without a doc. http://www.mm3admin.co.za/documents/docmanager/6e64f7e1-715e-4fd6-8315-424683839664/00056616.pdf
Hi Soccer mom, the numbness could very well be MAV symptoms which Is vestibular migraines (no headache required) He could have MAV or MM and MAV, in my signature are links to Dr Gacek study (same as Scott gave you)..on page 104 are the doses he uses for Meniere's and a link to info about MAV
Sodium didn't impact me, neither did caffeine. Stress and fatigue are definite triggers for me. And yes, getting prescriptions for anti-virals is just as hard as it ever was. Even though so so many people have positive improvements.
It depends on where you're at. I've had no problem getting them, and have 3 doctors who are willing. If you're anywhere near Tampa, then hit up their Hearing Center.
Both sodium and caffeine affect me. It's better to cut down, nothing to lose there. Welcome back. Hit the other rooms. Have some fun!
