Have you consulted with a BPPV-knowledgable physical therapist about the Epley maneuver? I started with a physical therapist, but then learned the at home version. I've stopped vertigo episodes with it. After I do the Epley maneuver I usually don't have vertigo from BPPV for months. I can definitely understand why you are wary, but there's so much potential positive, it might be worth exploring more if you haven't yet.
Try the other - somersault type maneuver. It was created/developed by a Dr Foster in CO I believe. It is easier to do by yourself at home.
