    Hi Vicki, and others

A while back you posted about Keratin (sp?) that help with your hair loss. I have been taking Toji from Amazon and I think it has slowed the loss, but no new growth. Also the pills smell really really bad - yuck. I was wondering what it was you took? Do you still take it? Do you still think it worked?

Just as a BTW, I take 3 Famcyclovir per day and have not had vertigo for a couple of years. Lead a pretty normal life with occasional ear fullness.

Hi Donamo , good to hear from you :) But sorry I was not using Keratin. I take b complex biotin especially is good for hair loss/growth and I used extra virgin coconut oil treatments once or twice a week. My hair is fine now and have stopped taking both for months.

    Vicki,
can I ask you how difficult it is to get the coconut oil out of your hair?

Your hair in your avatar picture is lovely.

Thanks Maggie, that picture is about 8-9 months old, I just got a haircut yesterday its a few inches shorter. I had a problem with the coconut oil. I thought I got it all out but in the back of my head I guess I didn't and developed folliculitis, which is clogged follicles. It itched like hell UGH.
But I want to start using it again and my hairdresser told me yesterday, not to wet my hair but put the shampoo on first because the water will act like a barrier. So I am going to try it again because my hair is very dry and do it the way she suggests.

You need to cover your hair with a plastic cap when you do the coconut oil treatment.

Thanks for that info ! I am due to get the ends trimmed in a couple of weeks so will wait til I consult with my hairdresser. I read somewhere that using a beaten egg in your hair after the coconut helps to get the coconut oil out.

I wonder if ingesting the coconut oil would be just as good as applying it to the hair. Another research project for you Vicki..... when you have time of course!

Apologies to Donomo for the highjack.

Maggie, Here is a thread about monolaurin (derived from coconut oil) but it pertains to information that says it kills viruses, nothing about hair.

Thanks for the link, Vicki. I have recently incorporated virgin coconut oil into my diet. I have no idea if it is helping with hair or not, too soon to tell. I am too chicken to put it into my hair.

People have been using eggs, mayonnaise, olive oil and others for their hair.

I don't think the coconut oil will hurt but it may have to be rinsed with hot water.

My bangs were thinning but I started cutting less bangs and layering them more and it's back to the way it was.
My hair/scalp isn't dry so I can go a week without washing it.
    I think that's helps, too.
Not so much tugging with the blow dryer.

    Good luck to you.

I have been taking the Biotin supplement, add a shower filter attachment (which filters out impurities/iron, etc in the water) and once a week do a vinegar rinse. For now, it appears that the hair loss itself has slowed. I don't have handfuls after showering. Fingers crossed.

By the way, I tried the biotin on it's own first.
The shower filter and vinegar rinse I started at the same time.

good news! nicmger yes biotin is much touted for stopping hair loss and regrowth.
for those who want to try the coconut oil treatment I found this on how to get it out of your hair. Coconut oil has also been said to regrow hair.

I did both biotin in a b complex vit and coconut oil for stopping hair loss and regrowth and so far my hair seems to be back as it was.

Nicmger, do you use apple cider vinegar?

Thanks for that link, Vicki. It makes me a little more inclined to try the coconut oil in my hair.

I am going to get my driver's licence renewed today so don't want to try it until after the picture. It will look bad enough as it is, don't need greasy hair to make it worse.

My hair isn't thinning, but I live in a cold climate. I am outside every day and wearing a toque doesn't cover much of my hair so I wanted to do some deep conditioning.

I don't blame ya Maggie, if you do try it, I would wait until you can hang the house for a few hours.

Maggie, I have used both "regular" white vinegar and apple cider vinegar. Both leave my hair feeling fresh and no issues with my scalp - but the white vinegar has a significantly lower smell so I lean towards that one. But note that both within an hour the smell is gone so should not be a concern. If you live in an area with hard water I would recommend looking into the shower filter. I moved from WA to VA a couple of years ago. My area of VA is considered "moderately hard" water. When I visited WA I noticed that I didn't lose as much hair and my hair felt better - thus my research into the water filter. :)

    Nicmger,
thanks for the info. I dislike apple cider vinegar taste and smell, so if the white works just as well, I will try that.

I know what you mean about hard water. Back in the day before there were so many pollutants, when I was a kid, we would gather rain water to wash our hair . Nothing made our hair softer and glossier than that.

Our water is fairly soft and I am not losing hair out of the ordinary, just want it well conditioned.

    Thanks, Vicki

For anyone considering trying the coconut oil in your hair, I just got back from getting my ends trimmed. I asked my stylist about the coconut oil and she was emphatic that I don't do it.

She said the molecules are too big and can't penetrate the hair. It is impossible to completely get it out without using a harsh shampoo that strips the hair.

Just thought I'd pass this on for anyone who was thinking about it.

Try putting some wheat germ in your cereal in the morning, also down a teaspoon of black strap molasses in the morning. All good things for hair.

Thanks for the tip, mustang. I will try to choke down some blackstrap. Shudder.
