To put it as simply and in less words as possible. It was all muscular in the neck and jaw. So muscular tightness dysfunction was responsible for vertigo about every six months lasting 6-12 hours in duration. In between was nearly full time feeling unbalanced like just having got off of boat, having springs and or thick sponges taped to the bottom of my feet. Then there was sensitivity to light, allergy symptoms like I never experienced before that also mainly affected my eyes. There was periods of brain fog, periods of head pressure, periods of head pressure and whooshing of my heart beat in my ears. There were periods of grayed out vision like looking across a room through fog. There was near constant keep me awake tinnitus that came and went. Sometimes there was loss of hearing for a few minutes. Loud sounds such as at a concert were unbearable and required ear plugs. There were a few times it felt like my brain has been zapped. Making me think maybe it was seizure of some sort. Through it all was constant unrentlenting ear pressure in my right ear that started to move into my left good ear. I tried all kinds of things including upper cervical chiropractic that helped, along with massage and trigger point massage that really had little affect. So what was it? Simple years long over ten years of clenching and sometimes grinding of teeth that in turn caused the muscular dysfunction that in turn caused the Meniere's symptoms I just described. Once got enough control over my clenching especially at night is over a long period of time is when I started experiencing a difference. If I clenched during the night ear pressure would return every time. As would the sore upper molars one of which is cracked. I did get a TMJD consult by way of a cone beam 3D x-Ray that shows I do not have TMJD. TMJD is one of the better known causes of Meniere's symptoms. I am very close to being completely without Meniere's symptoms now. I still have left over neck and jaw muscle stiffness that without constant PT will stiffen up and again try to bring back ear pressure and nasal congestion. I am not having to take any allergy meds this spring although I do take only one a week as opposed to several a day to include nasal sprays. As I visit varying discussion support forums I'm struck by the number of people complaining of muscular issues in the neck. That being the case there is cause that requires to be found. Then as think about tight muscles I believe it prevents normal flow of blood and fluids in and out of the head area thereby causing a number of Meniere's like symptoms.

  2. Great!

Hope it continues to go your way.

Interesting. How did you stop the chenching at night...did you use a mouth splint? I tried the whole neuromuscular dentist approach (I do have TMJ) but couldn't tolerate wearing the mouth splints. Couldn't sleep with the night one, and couldn't eat or talk with the day one. So that was a $6,000 failure I'm still paying off.

I am currently trying a very experienced TMJ physio who also works on my neck but have just run out of private health insurance covering this so about to abandon that too.

Given the state of my jaw and neck, I'm pretty sure my dizziness (I don't seem to have true menieres) is stemming from that, but the financial gamble finding suitable treatment is crippling.

Besides trying to discover the cause stopping clenching has very tough. It's been a matter of breaking a bad habit by keeping my top and bottoms molars apart and not touching. I'm notb100% there and may never be. But I'm far enough along to get results. In that im also looking into sleep apnea and snoring to see if there is any link. It's also been teaching my mind and body to naturally be in a relaxed state despite being prone to both. It has taken months and I considered hypnotherapy along with Behavioral therapy and if I had to digging deeper into the physchological realm. Like you though I felt I had thrown enough money at this. There is quite a bit of self help so I'm have learned to do my own Pat and use a Theracane to do my own trigger point therapy. I do believe in finding and addressing root cause. Had it turned out I had TMJD I'm certain until addressed in total those symptoms would still prevail. I believe there are all kinds of causes of muscular dysfunction that lead to Meniere's symptoms not necessarily in the realm of TMJD. Then there are viral causes and food sensitives such as in gluten and celiac disease. Then the thyroid cannot be overlooked either or B12 Deficiency. But it seems to me the muscular and viral cause lead the way.

Wow, I'm booked to see a sleep specialist in 10 days! I also strongly suspect I have sleep apnea, as diagnosed by the neuromuscular dentist in three home sleep studies. The night splint was supposed to help this and it did at first, but I just couldn't sleep with it in the end...so uncomfortable.

I apparently don't snore much but have to get up to use the toilet about 4-5 times a night...a classic symptom of sleep apnea.

I am also an anxious/tense person!

Given I hate the mouth appliance, I'm not looking forward to the possibility of a cpap machine.

I've just seen an integrative doctor and had a huge battery of detailed tests and scans (oh my goodness...that was an expensive endeavor too). Thryoid/vitamin levels excellent but she made me two a two hour fasting blood glucose test which revealed I was pre-diabetic (unstable blood sugar is another sleep apnea symptom). I'm not overweight and don't eat gluten, avoid my known food intolerances, take every supplement there is but nothing helps.

I am so darn tired every day, sleep deprivation is the only thing left. I found a few instances of vertigo being eradicated once sleep apnea was treated.

Thought I would chip in with the relaxation assistance. I use the Alexander Technique as described in Noel Kingsley's book "perfect poise perfect life". Works for me, helps me relax and get off to sleep too.

I have been told i have TMJ and i also grind my teeth when i sleep according to my dentist. Now that i have dental insurance i am definitely going to ask about getting a mouth guard for when i sleep.

OneHorse, you may want to try a wedge pillow. My sister bought this MedSlant one for her husband:

Her husband has sleep apnea and he always hated his cpap machine and wouldn't use it. This pillow has helped his snoring tremendously! It has also helped my sister with her GERD.

Interesting re the wedge pillow, thank you! I imagine it would also help BPPV, which I also get from time to time.
