I was thinking the other day about what things I can't do anymore because of MM. Finally, I just said to myself, I just had to suck it up and focus on what I still can do. How about you?
It's been many years since I have lived in terms of what I cannot do. I don't have that mindset. In my case it wasn't about sucking it up as much as releasing self defeating thoughts and embracing self developing ones. I still operate that way.
I found myself putting some things on hold during the horrible days of meniere's but I never said "I can't." Not in my vocabulary. If you allow your mind to think you can't do something than chances are you won't do it. I always knew that the vertigo would pass eventually and I might waste a day in bed but I never gave up the things I love to do. Look for a way out, don't throw in the towel, don't ever give up.
I wasn't really claiming defeat. There are still a lot of things I can do. I just had to finally accept the things I couldn't do. That's all.
That's exactly it! I'm glad you got to that level of awareness. It just makes life so much sweeter. I'm happy for you, Sally.
I would say i took time off from an activity, and having MM has changed some things but I never thought I can't do that, I focused more on what I can do. I took 3 years off as I was a active cyclist. I slowly got back on the bike and have now over the past 3 years got back close to the same level I was before I was sidelined. I still have days that i am not 100% and will skip a day, but don't have the I can't do it, I just say taking a day off.
I think the key for me is adjusting my thought process. Some things take longer. Some things I avoid altogether. Some things can't be avoided. It's all in how you adapt to a situation.
Everyone here has different vestibular disorders, so what might apply to you, may not apply to the next person. I'm sorry to sound like a pessimist, but when I read your posts it's almost verbatim from "self help books" or a lot of psychological therapy. I've read you don't have menieres.
Thank you for the compliment. I am absolutely a self help type of person. We are invited to speak for what works for us so please add your contribution so others may learn new perspectives. Hope you have a great day.
There was no compliment. I repeat, we all have different vestibular disorders and at different stages. What I can do or what you can do, the next menieres.org poster may not be able to do.
Well of corse that is true regardless of Meniere's or anything else. We can only do our best, not anybody else's. It was a compliment to me. I am very much a self help person.
I believe there are many people on this forum who do not have menieres but share their experience with menieres like symptoms. I also believe that a positive, can do attitude goes a long way in living a productive, satisfying life. Just saying...
