After more than 2 years on anti-virals, I have finally been able to get down to 2 grams of Valacyclovir/day. I was never able to do that on the generic brands, though they did help me, but I have been able to on the brand name Valtrex. Now it's time to try going down to 1 gram a day. I am nervous about it. I have liked the routine I have taking the Valtrex and a Lysine together about 15 min before breakfast and before dinner. I'll continue with the lysine 2x/day. Those of you who are able to be on a maintenance does of an anti-viral, have you found that a certain time of day works best? If so, when?
I take mine in the morning. Have never really experimented with other timing - so unfortunately can't answer that part of the question.
I'm so glad to hear that you're feeling a lot better and able to get down to 2g. I also believe that Valtrex is superior to the generics. In the morning, right after i eat breakfast, i take my maintenance dose, along with 5 grams of Vitamin C. I'm not convinced the C helps with vertigo, because by itself, it didn't do anything, but i am convinced it helps with colds and flu, and that helps with ears plugging up, etc. I take lysine at night. If i'm having a stressful day or feel anything other than 100%, i'll take a second 1000 mg at night.
Scott, I like that idea in theory, very much, because 2 grams to 1 seems like such a big jump. However, when I was taking 2.5 grams/day of Ranbaxy I found those pills with the cut edge often made me gag, and it wasn't easy to cut them in half, so cutting off a quarter pill sounds quite challenging. If you have any tips on that though, I'm all ears (so to speak).
Good point. I do not have experience cutting these pills, but i've cut other pills like it. I used a pill cutter that i bought in Walgreens. I never noticed rough edges, but yes, that certainly could be an issue. Perhaps "sand" them down with something? Or just crush them into powder and take it that way?
