Hi Folks, It's been quite awhile since I have posted here - been fortunate - no vertigo attacks for over 4 yrs. Now, for some reason they are starting again and I have added Acyclovir to my JOH regimen.
My ENT guy was very willing to give the antivirals a try - so I am now on 1200 mg. of Acyclovir a day for 3 weeks then drop to 800 a day for 3 weeks etc.
I am experiencing a terribly loud roaring and ringing in my head that lasts for many hours and is almost unbearable. The best way I can describe it is if your head was under the hood of a car with the horn blowing for hours at a time. Has anyone else here experienced this with acyclovir? My ENT guy thinks it is just another manifestation of the MM and not the antiviral.
This happens about once a week - the disease has also gone into my good ear and there is a lot of pressure and it always feels like I'm talking in a tunnel and echoing and both ears pop when I swallow.
The vertigo spells have stopped but I still get dizzy and am so tired all the time. I know part of that is age related (I'm 78 yrs old). Thanks for listening. The loud noise is happening as I wright this so please forgive me if this is a bit confusing.

It is common to experience more symptoms at first when taking antivirals. That may be what is happening. If the acyclovir doesn't work, then you may want to try Valtrex, as it is more effective. Also, Famvir is an option.

Thanks for the reply scott tom - I really wanted to start out on Valtrex, but before I could tell my Dr. that - He was out the door doing paper work and writing prescrips. So maybe at my next appt. I can get him to switch me to valtrex.

Yeah, try the acyclovir first. That might work, as it's worked for many people. Good luck!

Maybe you can make a phone call before your next appointment.

river rat - I am not familiar with that particular anti viral (heard of it of course). But wonder if you should look at which manufacturer it is and then do an online search to see if anyone has experienced issue with that particular one. I know that I have issues with the Mylan vs of valtrex but success with Northstar. Could be similar issue with Acyclovir? Not sure but wanted to share.

Will also echo that there are other antivirals, some work better than others for each individual.

I also had my Dr specify Northstar as the manufacturer on the script.

Is that for the valacyclovir? I am not sure if Northstar makes acyclovir...they could!
