Just started on valacyclovir...

Discussion in 'Your Living Room' started by JeffreyVik, Oct 29, 2016.

  1. I was able to get the generic from Northstar. Started today. Praying this works, I'm miserable. In addition, noise is making me SO dizzy I'm about to lose my mind.

  2. Quick question for anyone on valacyclovir - just started today, only taken 2 doses and feel really dizzy. Anyone else experience this and if so how long did it last? Not sure if it's MM or the drug!

A lot of people experience a worsening of conditions before it gets better. It is apparently the virus putting up a fight.

I also heard that for some people it gets a little worse initially and then clears up. For me it didn't make me more dizzy. Question is whether you are talking vertigo (room spinning) or off balance. If off balance/dizzy you may be able to take a meclizine to offset that while your system adjusts.

  5. It's definitely just dizziness and feeling lightheaded. It is really bad with noise, talking, etc. The doctor said this dizziness with noise is not a typical Menieres symptom and is doing a test to rule out other things on Tuesday. It is making me crazy and is a new thing for me! Was hoping the antivirals will help, but am only on day two and seem to be even more dizzy since starting them. MM is the worst!!

I have been very off balance since starting and the loud noises affect me similarly. Ive been on generic valtrex for about a week. Last night I had an awful spike in my tinnitus, which usually happens toward the end of my episodes but today it is still here, just back to what it was. Im hoping it's just the war going on between the menieres and the anti-viral. It is truly miserable.

I had basically same thing ,extreme symptoms on the antivirals, off balance like you describe nearly every day. Then I would have a cataclysmic dizziness and my hearing comes back, tinnitus lowers and I go into remission. Actually this has happened 3 times to me in the last 3 years. Alas I have taken a very small maintenance dose and this might be why it returns with such fury.Recently I took Famvir 3000mg for 3 weeks , miserable the whole time. Then got quite dizzy all day and then everything settled down. Now I am taking just 1/2 of a 1000 Famvir per day. I cant be sure the Famvir did it (I hope that it did). I am afraid to quickly go up to 1000 a day for fear of getting miserable again. It is also easy to say that other things I did that week brought me to remission like my flu bug finally subsided or a new nasal wash I am using or having a tooth pulled 1 year ago 3 days before I went into remission then. But I have read so many success stories about antivirals here and elsewhere that it is hard to ignore. I have recently ordered true Valtrex made in their (GSK) Turkey (country of Turkey) mfg plant. It is much cheaper than here. I will try it in small doses as a maintenance when it arrives or may stick with the famvir for awhile. I hope Gardengal is doing well :)

  8. How were you able to order Valtrex from GSK in Turkey? I'm on the generic brand from the Northstar manufacturer that was recommended on this site. Sometimes I feel like this disease is a death sentence even though it's not fatal!

Personally I am not sure that I agree (I am not a doctor though!!!). For me - and this was before anti virals - there were certain sounds/voices that would actually "hurt" my ear, being in a conference room with closed doors with a couple of specific people was horrible. I started carrying around ear plugs that helped A LOT. I put the plug in my bad ear and it was a definite improvement. Also, before a/v, two different times I was at a concert with my ear plugs but the noise started to make me dizzy and I thought I was going t have a vertigo attack. I had to get up and walk around for a bit. Certain really loud movie theaters too. AND I had every test to rule out any other cause of vertigo.

I will say that when I got my hearing aid it helped. Which even today makes no sense to me that a hearing aid to help me hear more and better actually helped to resolve the noise issues. Makes no sense - but I guess with this disease that is par for the course!

I would try the meclizine to see if it helps. Pickup an ear plug and try that. And try to wait out the initial phase to see if the a/v work for you. A lot of times I have heard/read that the increased activity is a good sign.

With the antiviral sometimes it gets worse before it gets better.
    With some people.
Also, I'd give it 3 months before giving up.

  12. Nicmerger - my doctor prescribed the a/v based on dr gacek's study so I only have enough pills to take the 3G a day for 3 weeks, then 2 and then 1. Is that what you followed? If I take the max dose longer, I will run out!

No, I was able to call and get permission to stay at the 3x/day for an additional 3 weeks. So 6 weeks at 3/day, then followed the rest of the protocol. I would ask your dr if he/she will approve an extension.

I will feel like I’m tipping over from loud noises sometimes. Hyperacousis... how is this NOT part of Menieres?? What other diagnoses is this doctor looking for?
