How long does it take salt to effect you?

    For those of you who are effected by salt intake. After consuming more than your limit, how soon do you feel the effects?

    For me, it usually happens the next day but I recall reading some posts here where people claimed it affected them almost immediately.

    2-3 hours after eating, but if it was a big splurge I am usually feeling it into the next day too.

    Good to know. I'd never been able to determine how much salt affected me. I had cut it down very low at a point and was even on a diuretic and still had symptoms, so I began to think salt wasn't a trigger for me. However recently I have had some really awful spikes and it came a couple hours after eating somewhat salty meals so I am starting to think it is related.

    This was kind of spooky! I just opened the forum to post a recent experience with salt and lo - this post was right on top.
    I have learned - the hard way - that salty foods can sneak up on a person. Foods that you just never connect with having lots of salt and have eaten them all your life with no obvious ill effects.
    Just lately - my MD has taken a new turn and has started a really loud howling in my ears every couple of days - almost unbearable. I have been trying to figure out what I am ingesting that is causing it. I discovered that the "Tylenol Arthritis" I have been taking several times a day for pain, was one of the culprits and the noise got a bit better after I quit taking that,but it still would happen every few days and I started thinking - maybe salt! Duhh! I have always love salty stuff and ate a ton of it over the years. I love McDonalds quarter pounders with cheese - always have!
    A week or so ago - The noise was gone for once and I was feeling pretty good, and I didn't feel like cooking so I bought and ate two quarter pounders with cheese -and about an hour and a half later that awful loud roaring started and lasted for 10 or 12 hours. so - I looked up the nutrition for them on line and discovered that each one had over 1100 mg. of salt - WOW - Whooda thunkit?
    From now on - I take nothing for granted - I will check the sodium content before eating anything.
    Since that day - there has been no more of that roaring - and no more dizzy spells either.

    I suspect that there are too many variables at work (quantity of salt, body type, weight, hydration state etc.) to give a definitive answer.

    By putting the word “salt” into the search box top right this related piece of advice from Dr Rauch came up on an old thread;

    2/3's of MM patients get better on a low salt diet. It isn't the low salt part that is most important though, you need to have your sodium intake be as consistent as possible throughout the day. No being good all day and then eating a pepperoni pizza.

    Of the 1/3 that don't get better on a consistent sodium diet, 1/3 of the 1/3 will respond to a diuretic. You need to give the diuretic at least two months to see if it works.
