Hello! I started taking Hydrochlorothiazide at a very small dose about a week ago, and now my blood pressure is too low, and my potassium levels are really bad so I have to take potassium supplements. Anyway, I've only been on it for a week, and I feel awful. Does anyone else have experience with this? I feel sooo tired and weak and just awful. Did anyone have to stop taking it because of side effects? Thanks!
I've been on Dyazide for 16 years. I've had no problems. In fact some blood pressure meds have a diuretic component as well. Maybe you need a different one or maybe you need to take something natural. I wish I could help more. Feel better
I'm hoping a different one will help. My doctor was conflicted because I have low blood pressure and he wanted to put me on something that didn't lower it terribly much. But the potassium thing is a bummer. It seems it all leads to dizziness from something. Meds are always frustrating though
I tried 3 different diuretic. They all caused my already low blood pressure to plummet. In spite of trying to recompense with diet, the loss of potassium, I needed to stop the use of a diuretic. After I finally gave up , I noticed no difference in my symptoms whatsoever. I do not believe that taking diuretics to alleviate the symptoms of Menieres is beneficial.
I tried Triamterine 4 years ago when this all started for me. It was awful. I felt so weak and out of breath. I stopped taking it less than a week after starting because I couldn't stand it. My doctor never offered anything else. I just assumed diuretics would never work for me. I just started seeing a new doctor this January and he also recommended diuretics. I told him about my awful experience and he suggested I try a different kind. He prescribed HCTZ for me and I was very skeptical about it. But I have been on it 3 weeks now with no side effects... and my ear fullness is much better! I was surprised. So maybe if you try a different kind it would work better for you.
Yes, i had problems. When i followed a low sodium diet and took half od the smallest maxide pill, i got so low sodium i became disoriented and almost fainted. My sodium had been checked fhe day before by the family dr but they had not gotten back to me. I ate a couple olives and got better. After than i went off the maxide which never helped my ear anyway. When i took diuretics of any kind, the arthritis in my wrists got so bad i called a surgeon to schedule an apt. When i quite the diuretic, my hands got better and i cancelled the apt. According to my family dr, anyone taking diuretics daily should have their blood tested regularly. It is a simple blood test and will id tify any electrolyte i balance which can be very dangerous.
In 2009, I was taking Dyazide for three months and got weaker and weaker until I nearly collapsed and had to call an ambulance. After a couple of days in the hospital on fluids I was okay. That was the last time I tried diuretics.
I have been taking Hydrochlorothiazide for 5 months now and at first I did fee very weak. I had also cut out caffeine as well so I don't know if it was the diuretic or the soda withdrawals I also was given the potassium supplements but don't take them as often as I should. Since I started taking them the vertigo stopped . I had my first one yesterday in 5 months. very brief not sure what caused it but that's my story.... hope it works out for you
I've been on and off several different diuretics in the 5.5 years I've been dealing with Meniere's. I forget the details, but in the first couple years it was HCTZ and Triamterine (sp?) and I had to make some changes due to pregnancy etc. The past couple years I've been on Acetazolimide (Diamox) without much problem in terms of side effects. I do have some kidney issues that were detected only when checked three years ago. Mild to moderate kidney disease. I didn't have any immediate "before Meniere's" bloodwork to compare it to, but from a few years prior things had been normal. My kidney doc hypothesizes that the damage was a result of high dose diuretics early on, for a couple years, unchecked by bloodwork... OR the high levels of L-Lysine I took for a couple years at that same time. There's no way of knowing for sure. The bloodwork has stayed stable (in the mild to moderate category) since being on Diamox. Not a small dose either -- I take 250mg 2x/day. What strikes me about this post though, isn't about the diuretics. It's that many of us (?) seem to have naturally very low blood pressure to begin with. I definitely fit the bill in this category. I saw Dr Foster in Denver a few years ago and she mentioned offhandedly that she has a subset of Meniere's patients who she's seen who fit this "type" -- youngish (I was late 30s at the time), female, somewhat slender build, and very low blood pressure naturally. Hmm.
