There is no bad or good eating. I think when we demonize food, we end up judging ourselves as well. Maybe your eating wasn't as balanced as you may have wanted but you can change that and tip the balance to your favor I took a cycling class early yesterday morning and my quads were on fire at the end...in a very good way! I thought about you red! Yoga after that made it all better. I like to get my workouts in very early in the morning so i can get on with the day. Today I was up and out at 5am. Ran 3 miles (on the treadmill since it's a rainy day) then barbell squats, deadlifts, 3 rounds of sprints and some ab work. If I could, I'd take a nap but I have work to do. My treat for working out hard this morning is a nice cup of decaf. I rarely have it so I am enjoying every sip. The grandsons are going to keep you busy in a happy way. So glad you get to enjoy them. Hiking and fishing sounds so perfect. I love being outdoors too. One of my favorite quotes says, "If not now, when?" So, get up, get out, take the steps you need to take and do your body and mind good. Now is all we have. Peace!
Today was an easy workout day. An hour of yoga early morning and an hour of swimming in the evening. Lots of movement and very good energy. Saw my trainer earlier and he aid he is going to work in some vestibular rehab stuff during our sessions. That's really good. He's very competent AND very easy on the eyes too. Hope you guys had a good day today. When you stay active & choose your thoughts you don't have the time to pay attention to the pettiness around you. Make tomorrow a great day. TGIF!
Admin Post Love this thread. I'm wondering if there's enough interest in a separate Health & Fitness section on here? We can always give it a try and see if it takes off... Thoughts? I've been on that sort of journey myself, having lost around 100lbs but it's the last 20 or so lbs I'm having the most trouble getting rid of lol ; ) Ray
I love this thread too. Health and Fitness mean different things to different people and, as my yoga instructor always says at the beginning of every class, "No judgement, no competition." I feel this thread does best here since we don't have many members participating, It would get lonely in a separate section! Maybe as more people realize that it is a non-competitive thread and even a 10-minute walk IS a good goal, they will join in. The last 10 or 20 lbs are always the hardest. Our bodies don't want to let go. It's the old "famine/feast" thing. My non-professional suggestion to you would be to switch up your activity level. If you are mostly a walker, pick a different type of terrain and walk at a higher pace and intensity. That will confuse your muscles and set things in motion again. As you already know (having lost 100 lbs) what you eat is 70% of how you look so I suggest switching things up in the kitchen as well with your daily Carb/Protein/Fat ratio.
Admin Post Good point. We'll see how things go here and if they pick up enough we can give it a shot. I mostly kayak, hike, and sometimes bike and barefoot run in the woods. I mix it up pretty good but I do need to be more consistent with it. ; ) Ray
It is a good topic. Did I mention ho my bp went down to normal when I started walking an ahour and a quarter every day? It really did. And I am 65!!
That is absolutely great news! I remember last year I'd tell you how low my BP was and you had the opposite problem It's really cool how just any form of daily exercise helps so much. Do you still ride your bike? Ray, yeah, consistency is key. I don't have the courage to run barefoot but trail running (with shoes!) is a lot of fun.
Ray, good for you! 100 pounds is a great achievement. I know you'll reach your goals. Me, I haven't been able to walk due to my little dizzy spell last week and the aftermath but I will start again tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to stick to the route I worked up to and not start at the beginning again. I spoke to my Dr and he said one of the reasons I've gained weight is because I had my gallbladder removed. I'm researching something called Ox Bile. I will probably order it and see if it helps.
"The cure for anything is salt water-- sweat, tears, or the sea." Isak Dinesen Cry a little if things get too overwhelming, exercise and sweat your frustration out if you can, and go for a long walk by a body of water (if you live near one) to experience the calm it brings. May your day be bright and happy! I got my workout done very early this morning: walked 2 miles to the gym, 40 minutes of strength training with my trainer, walked 2 miles back home. Now it's work and all the rest of it. Cheers! Be nice to everyone
Admin Post Thanks, BumbleBea. It might be encouraging to you and others to know I lost the bulk of that weight by simply walking up and down hills around 30-40 minutes each day. The weight just melted off in less than a year. The hardest part is actually keeping it off! Excellent advice about water, Intrepid... It's very healing. This morning for some reason I felt crappy so I hit the kayak hard for about 40 mins and worked up a really good sweat. Always good for the soul to burn those kind of things off and even better when you can do it in the balm of nature. Barefoot running is beautiful, esp. on the trails in the woods or on the beach. You do need to work up to it though and toughen the soles of your feet first and also make sure you're running properly in bare feet which is quite a bit different from running in shoes. It's so worth it feeling the earth under my feet. I go barefoot just about all the time nowadays. It's a sensory delight. Am glad you're doing well. Ray
That is encouraging, thank you. Right now I'm walking around a big block. It's about 1/2 an hour but it's a good start ,there are hills here I could work up to. I've also found that walking on the beach in the sand is a good workout and will try that soon too. Sometimes my legs feel rubbery when I get back but that's good too.
Admin Post BumbleBea, that's great. You know what they say: Baby steps. That's how I started. I couldn't go up one hill without being completely wiped out in the beginning. And there were six of them. Eventually I conquered them all. You will conquer your own "hills" in due course : ) Ray
Working out has medicinal properties for me. I don't go for long hours. I prefer intense work that is done in 45 minutes, sometimes even 30 minutes. When I walk, or run, then I prefer long distance because it's very calming and grounding. It's like Ray says, start small and build from there. If your legs are shaky it could be partly because you are not using those muscles a lot and partly because they are holding you up in balance so there is tightness and strain. Tight muscles can give you the rubbery leg feeling you describe. Today was a longer session of HIIT and an hour of swimming. I'm pleasantly tired but alert and happy. Hope you all sleep well, have tranquil dreams and meet the morning with a positive thought. Mine is usually, "What's for breakfast?"
Admin Post Mine's "WHERE'S MY COFFEE?!" Oh, how I love it. She is my true love and always there for me every morning... Afternoons... And evenings. What a delight. ; ) Ray
Went to the grocery store and got a lot of fresh fruit, vegetables and some good organic meat and eggs. I don't drink milk so it's almond milk for me. Today was an early morning easy 2-mile run and an hour of Yoga. I've been going to Yoga classes 3 times a week because they make me feel all stretched out, limber and very relaxed. I'm supposed to work on swimming later this evening but my body says sleep and recover so that's what I think I will do. I need at least 7 hours of sleep (usually 8 hours) to function well and I'm glad I don't have any sleeping problems. It takes me 5 seconds to fall asleep and I can nap just about anywhere. I don't drink coffee but I do enjoy a cup or two of decaf now and again. It's not the same thing, I know, but I don't like that caffeine jolt. I just like to stay chill and use my own energy. Helps me unwind naturally at the end of the day and go to bed easily. When you feel like quitting, always remember: One Day At A Time Cheer! Have a super day. Do something you love
Did you run today, Ray? Or was it a water day? I miss the ocean. It's so beautiful and restorative on every level. Next week my family goes on a beach vacation but I have things to do here Early morning upper body strength training with trainer followed by an hour of yoga. So blissful. My traps hurt like hell. I'm taking it to be a good sign. As Michael Pollan said, "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." I will confess I have been eating more meat since lifting heavier weights but I make sure I eat loads of vegetables every day. Smile! Be good to yourselves.
Admin Post Intreprid: Yesterday I kayaked, might do a light trail run and swim today not sure yet - I go by feeling. I like to give my body a break every other day as I've noticed it performs best this way. Running on the beach is a beautiful feeling for me. I don't live near one but whenever I visit relatives who do, I'll go there often and run at sunset and then dive in to cool off. Mmmmm... Enjoy your extended weekend! Ray
