    Hello All,
This is my first post here. I am 63 and have been diagnosed as probably having Meniere's disease. I live in Japan. I was wondering if the following are somewhat standard medications for this.
    ADETPHOS KOWA GRANULE Carteolol hydrochloride
    Isosorbide
    Ifenprodil tartrate
    Betahistine mesylate
    B12

Also, I am taking Kudzu which is a supplement I bought online and something called "Clear Eye and Sharp Ear" which I also bought online. Then again I am also trying John of Ohio's regimen. I think that using all of these together is probably too much and I was wondering what others thought about it? By the way, the Beta Glucan that John of Ohio suggests does not seem to agree with me although I am not sure. It may cause me joint pain.
I am not sure but I think that John of Ohio's regimen works better than the medication I am being prescribed.
I would love to hear some comments.
    Thanks.

    Welcome Bill.

I am also on JOH and it has helped me immensely. I just searched the JOH document for beta glucan and did not find it as part of the regimen. Along with JOH, I am on 5 other supplements not directly related to MM.

"Probably Menieres" is about all they can diagnose. There seem to be many variations of symptoms and triggers.

How long have you been on JOH? How long have your symptoms been flared. When I started thinking about my MM symptoms, I found I could recall related symptoms of lesser intensity for up to 10 years past. It was a bit over a year ago the hammer swung for me. I have been almost symptom free for nearly 4 months. Now, only the tinnitus remains with varying intensity.

    Thank you for the reply!

My symptoms appeared after I got the flu and took a fairly long dose of antibiotics for the bronchitus I got after the flu. About two days after I stopped the antibiotics I got tinnitus, which I never really had before. I was under a lot of stress for the prior 4 months. The stress continued and I was really pushing myself. Then about 3 or 4 weeks after the tinnitus began I started with the pressure in my head and dizziness and so on. It has been a year since then. The John of Ohio regimen and the other supplements do seem quite helpful. I am not sure about the medication.
With regard to beta glucan it is written about here:
    http://menieresfoundation.org/johnsregimen.htm
A second component that fights herpes (and other) viruses is beta 1,3 glucan, an extract of the common bread yeast cell wall. The compound was developed in Norway as a food additive for ocean-reared salmon that were being devastated by a number of microbial diseases. Beta glucan products were shown to attach to white blood cells (macrophages) and dramatically increase the salmons’ immune system ability to fight off bacteria and suppress fungi and viruses. Beta glucans have been shown to safely boost the immunity of organisms from shrimp on up to humans. Beta glucans are also strong anti-oxidants.

Interesting is that the version of the document I downloaded stated Lysine as the most important and no mention of beta glucan. Huh!

I hope you have the same experience I have had.

Have you had a workup including an mri to rule out other causes? That is usually the first thing tha tis done because there can be other causes for the same kinds of symptoms.

What i have experienced as typical treatment is prednisone if there is a sudden hearing loss. Diuretics (help some a lot, others not at all), a hydrops diet moderate sodium intake spread evenly throughout the day. What helped me was none of those but eliminating caffeine, antiviral meds (acyclovir and famvir) and allergy testing and shots. Good luck. It takes a while. Try ditching caffeine.

Hi. Thanks for the advice. I did get the MRI. I may ask my doctor to prescribe antivirals. I have cut our about 70% of my caffine. Thanks for the note about moderate sodium spread throughout the day. I found this:
    http://www.dizziness-and-balance.com/disorders/menieres/hydrops.html

My symptoms are pressure at the top of the head, dizziness originating from there and the forehead, tinnitus, sometimes slight nausea.

I don't have any headaches (fortunately). Does that fit into Migraine Associated Vertigo?

You definitely can have migraines without headaches. The book i hear recommended here is Heal Your Headache. Many here can speak to MAV. I dont happen to have it but many here do.

Glad to find you in the same area. If you have pressure on your head and dizziness, I can recommend a neurologicsl doctor, as many of us begin to realize that cervical misalignment is doing something to MM.
Tokyo Neurological Center takes care of CNMS or cervical neuro-muscular syndrome. A part of your desease might be this.
Regarding your prescription, none of them that ENT prescribes for Meniere's works for me and all others. I quit afephos, isosolbide, betahistine, and B12. Did I get worse by quitting them? I actually got better!

And another check point can be teeth alignment. Many of those whose teeth is misaligned may cause cervical misalignment as well. I am successfully away from any of MM symptoms by occlusal alignment, cervical alignment / restoration, and some exercises.
And yes, JOH is a great help, too. ;)

Wow! I never expected to find someone in this group from Japan. Thank you for the information. I will try to make an appointment to go to Tokyo Neurological Center. I am in Oita but sometimes go to Tokyo.
Do they also do occlusal alignment, cervical alignment / restoration at that clinic or do you have other information or clinics for that?

I went to a chiropractor specialized in cervical adjustment in Iidabashi. That was pretty good.
Occlusal alignment takes longer like half a year, so I hope you have a good dentist with occlusal specialty near you.

Thank you. Do you happen to remember the chiropractor's name and/or website? Also by occlusal alignment is this the correct Japanese? 咬合整列

    Bill,

Check this link out in your spare time.
    http://www.burconchiropractic.com/

There is published research regarding the C1/C2 misalignment correlation to Menieres. There is also a TMJ correlation. Personally, I have been in PT for several months now looking for a connection as I have historical upper cervical issues. It seems like the obvious 1st possible link for me to pursue. Everyone is different and there are many possible triggers for Menieres.

    BOL.

For your search in dentistry with occlusal specialty (yes 咬合 is the right word):

Thank you so much for the information and thanks to all in the forum. I want to say that I think that Kudzu helps. Supposedly it loosens up your shoulder area. I also am taking something called "Clear Eye & Sharp Ear" and I think that also is helpful. It is hard to say because at the moment I am taking too many things and have to cut back. I also think that JOH works for me. Sometimes I have to take small doses of a valium type drug but not as much as without these supplements.
I am really grateful to the site owner hear for putting this site up and to all the comments.

Thanks for your findings. I take Kudzu time to time, and it might have really good effect as you say.
Clear eye & sharp ear looks like a traditional Chinese medicine, but I couldn't find the original name. I know a few of TCM alleviates Meniere's symptom. This will be in my list for further research.
