I know this is not related to Menieres but some of you are so knowledgeable I thought I'd give it a try.
A little background. My 22 year old daughter went for an Endoscopy today and has an Ultrasound scheduled for next week. The Drs initial diagnosis is Acid Reflux. I looked it up on the web but thought maybe some of you have had experiences with this and could offer experiences and helpful hints. I would appreciate it.

  2. Why a Ultrasound? She taken taken meds for the acid reflux?

I think a good place to start is usually the Mayo Clinic website-
    http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/gerd/basics/definition/con-20025201

When you get to the bottom of the definition you can follow the arrow to Symptoms to Causes to Risk Factors etc.

I visited that site but thank you. Yes the symptoms listed there are exactly what she's experiencing.
Imagine this, when she first went to the primary, he said oh it must be stress and put her on Xanax!
They hand out narcotics so easily these days. It's no wonder we have an epidemic of pill abuse that leads to heroine and other drugs.

Dietary modifications have helped in many cases of acid reflux as well as weight loss. Sometimes those issues can be caused by H. Pylori bacteria or a defective flap that doesn't work well to keep stomach contents in the stomach.

Years ago, I had a wierd kind of GERD that caused me to have the smell of HCL in my nose all the time. It was caused by the flap at the top of the stomach not closing completely all the time and that was caused by hormones. It was worse at certain times of the month when I did not take bcp's and it was intolerable and constant when I was taking a certain low dose bcp.

I would get rid of the dr who put her on xanax.

It took years for the drs to figure out what it was. I think it was progesterone. They told me it was the same reason pregnant women often had gerd, which is not caused by a big belly but by the extra hormones in the body at that time.

    I was thinking the same thing. I wouldn't take'em.

Thank you all. I had her take the Xanax, half, for a few days just to see if it helped. When all it did was make her tired we stopped. I felt it reasonable to assume it was stress related. She just broke up with a boyfriend, college and finals coming up. I just think a primary should not be giving out narcotics so easily.
We'll know more after the ultrasound. The Gastro is really good. For now he told her no caffeine, no carbonated drinks, no alcohol, no smoking. All of which she doesn't do anyway.
Just waiting for the biopsy on the esophagus, any time I hear the word biopsy I get freaked out.
Than you all for your concern.

I had surges of stomach acid and reflux when I had hyperparathyroidism, if you want to get into obscure conditions. Basically, too much hormone which regulates calcium in the blood. The calcium affects nerve function. It causes a lot of other problems, too, such as being tired and stupid, and kidney stones.

I suffered with acid reflux for about 2 years. The culprits were two ulcers. One in the oesophagus and another further down. Didn't enjoy the 4 cameras down my throat but the ulcers disappeared after medication just over a year ago.

The cause of the ulcers were I'm sure due to stress from several events, including financial degree exams at age 59 and 60 which were so hard because information and knowledge is not retained after a certain age and my lovely mum dying quite unexpectedly.

They ruled out ulcers with the Endoscopy, thank goodness. I'm hoping they can remove the stones in the gallbladder and not have to take out the gallbladder. Acid reflux was the initial diagnosis before the other tests were done. Although it's entirely possible she has both. That's something I will ask the Gastro tomorrow. I think the stones are the culprit.

Final diagnosis is acid reflux and a gallbladder that is not working and has to come out. I'm a wreck.

Better to have it out before it creates an emergency situation, isn't it? Will she have the laproscopic surgery? I had it about 15 years ago and recovery was pretty easy though I know it varie from patient to patient.

He said to call the surgeon right away, so that will be tomorrow. They mostly do surgeries Lapiscroptically unless for some reason they can't. I know it has to be done, but now that I'm alone, I'm freaking out. If it was me, okay, but it's her. Do you understand?

Yes, I do. But, I know you want to be strong and calm for her, so I want to share that it wasn't too bad in my case. The pain I had from my gall stones was the worst I ever experienced in my life so I was happy to have it outta there.
