    Hello,
Can anyone tell me the names of the migraine medicines prescribed to people with Meniere's and possibly MAV?
    Is Topamax one of them?
    Thanks,
    Karina

Sorry to have taken so long to get back to you Karina. The last couple of days havent been my best. Anyway, I went to Johns Hopkins last Oct for my MM. They were convinced all my issues were Migraine related (though I have never suffered with migraines) and prescribed a MAV diet and recommended the book "Heal Your Headache" by Dr David Buchholz. There was a list of various meds that they recommended to try if the diet didnt work....from Diltiazem, Nortriptylin or Effexor, Propranolol, Tropiramate or Sodium Valprate. If you want a copy of the handout I will mail it to you. Just PM me and we can discuss. I strictly adhered to the diet for 4 months will little relief. At the time I didnt want to explore the medications they suggested. That's when I set out to do my own research and found this site. I still do a modified version of the diet, just because I figure it cant hurt. Good luck with your appt.

Karina, I was prescribed topiramate as preventative for migraine and sumatriptan for acute migraine. The neurologist also said I should take magnesium, so I've been taking 400mg at night and since I've had fewer headaches. I wasn't eager to more meds, so I haven't tried the topiramate or needed to use the sumatriptan.

I also have been careful with possible migraine trigger foods and that seems to help. Cannabis works well to alleviate headache and nausea.

I've also been taking valacyclovir for about 6 weeks now, down to 1 gram per day, and that may be a factor in my improvement - no acute episodes of vertigo and nausea since.

In addition, they might give you propanolol, which I tried, but made me feel way too fatigued and dizzy, so I discontinued that one.

    Thank you for the replies.
I used to have migraines from when I was 13 yrs old until maybe 29 or so. They completely went away.
I have noticed lately that I'm getting a very mild headache with slight dizziness and that's why I was curious to know which are the most common MAV meds.
I still ride my bike very competitively and I don't want anything to make me drowsy or sleepy.
I'm a bit dizzy everyday and that's why I think I have MAV. The dizziness is less and less intense as the weeks on Valacyclovir pass by.
    Thanks

    Hey Karina.
What has helped me is Verapamil and Amitriptiline. From what I understand Topimax has lots of side effects and is used with people who are really getting slammed with migraine symptoms. I too was like you had them from an early age they stopped in my 20's and then all of this mm and mav stuff started up later in life. I only occasionally get an aura and no headache thank goodness. Good luck!
