Hey Gang, I'm sure this topic has been covered before, but I can't seem to find the info in one place. My GP gave me a scrip for Valtrex last month. So far I've only had a handful of "couch days"(where I can't get off the couch). So I've been doing much better. I'm using the generic from MYLAN, but I heard that that may not be as effective. The Target by my house (CVS pharmacy) has a different brand. Any suggestions on which has worked best for people. I've heard Northstar mentioned a lot. Thanks in advance. Mike
I use Northstar, but the only place I could find that mfg was Costco - so I got a Costco membership (although you don't have to do that)! I read about a lot of issues with Mylan which is why I avoided them!!
I've used Northstar, Mylan, Lucid, and Cipla. Northstar SEEMS to be the only one that has worked for me. This beast is so episodic that it's tough to tell if Northstar was responsible or if the disease just happened to be in a dormant stage. I'm finally getting Northstar again with my next prescription on 6 June. If I take that for a few weeks and run into another long (3-5 weeks) stretch of symptom-free living then I will tend to believe that the other generics are just not effective. I'll try to keep you posted.
My ENT begrudgingly prescribed antivirals. I was on half of the dosage suggested here. I ended up with Mylan as I hadn't heard that it isn't considered as effective. My dizziness started gradually getting better. I had 3 1/2 weeks with no dizziness. I ran out about a week ago and need to find someone else to prescribe them. I got dizzy yesterday for about 5 hours. Seems to support the antivirals helping--so I do think Mylan helped. Will be looking to try another when I find someone to write it for me.
I've been taking the Mylan valacyclovir for 2 months and have had only 2 episodes of vertigo, which was controlled with valium thankfully. I've had months with 15 espisodes of vertigo, and months with 2 episodes for a couple of years now, so I can't say for sure whether the antiviral is helping/making a difference. I looked into getting another brand (unavailable) and the name brand Valtrex (too expensive), so I'll keep on with this one and hope for the best.
I have to believe that with all the negative publicity that Mylan has been receiving from people with obvious herpes infections, they must be trying to improve their product.
They are not motivated to change anything because: A) The FDA refuses to actually do their job B) Insurance companies will keep paying and this essentially forces their clients to use that brand since pharmacies often don't stock other brands Just like every other aspect of the medical system... keep the $$$ rolling in.
