My bad ear is very sensitive to pressure changes. An airplane flight 5 years ago was a disaster. I even have trouble driving up and down steep hills. I've been pretty limited in where I go the last 5 years.

So this summer I tried train travel to Tucson, which is at 2500 ft, about 1300 ft higher than I'd been in the last 5 years. It worked! It was so great to see someplace new and is such a relief. It also helped me see that it's likely that it is the rate of change in pressure not the elevation itself that causes the problem.

The only problems I had were going into tunnels and one steep climb. Putting in my pressure-change-slowing ear plugs (I like the Alpine FlyFit ones) solved those problems.

I have trouble with restaurants because of the noise--a sweet bonus for me was that I could tolerate the noise in the train's dining car (I think because they do the cooking and dishes on the lower level, so that noise is not present). What a treat to have a restaurant-like experience!

One key for me was upgrading from coach so that I was in quieter quarters.

It's great you could enjoy a getaway. I will only go to places I can drive since MD. I find I also find I am avoiding noisy places due to the noise sensitivity in my affected ear. I actually enjoy the driving as the road noise cancels the constant whine from the Menieres.

:)That's great. Thanks for the info. I'm going to buy some of those ear plugs.
