To those of you who take Betahistine, what is your dosage level? Also have you experienced severe headaches while upping the med?

I take 24mg, 3x/day. I've been on it for ~4 years and I think I might have gotten a few headaches early on, but my body quickly adjusted and it wasn't a problem for long (maybe a week or two?).

Per an appt I had with my oto yesterday, I am going to slowly start scaling back my meds over the next few months. First slowly decreasing the diuretic (I am on a fairly high dose) and then the Betahistine. This is after 6 years of being on the former and 4ish of the latter.

  3. Why are you scaling back your meds? I've been on a diuretic for nearly 16 years. They check my kidneys every year, but have never suggested I stop taking it??!!

A couple reasons. My kidneys sadly are not ok. I've been on various diuretics for the past 6 years and my kidneys went unmonitored for the first 2-3 years. When I moved here, my blood was checked (new doc) and it showed my kidneys were compromised :( I was diagnosed with moderate kidney disease. I have bloodwork from a time just before MM started (before diuretics) which show totally normal kidney function. The thought is, it was either the more strong diuretics or possibly the high dose Lysine (I took for about 2 years). Likely we will never know. The good news is, since it was caught and we switched the diuretic to Diamox, the bloodwork remains totally stable with no further kidney damage. I get it checked every 4-6 months.

The other reason I'm scaling back is a good news one... my symptoms (KNOCK WOOD) and my hearing have mostly stabilized over the past year and I've also been vertigo free. (again, not wanting to jinx things). I have a moderate permanent loss and I still have fullness and tinnitus but here's hoping the worst is behind me. My doc thinks my bad ear has reached burnout based on the pattern of my loss. he also thinks I have a dual diagnosis of both MM and vestibular vertigo (MAV).
