Is this helpful during a vertigo episode? Is it over the counter? Do you just take it when everything is spinning? Thank you!
In my opinion...You are better off with Valium. Although neither work very well. Once you are spinning your best bet is sleep.
Antivert doesn't help much for most with MM other than to make you sleepy. For me, using Valuim at the very beginning of an event apparently does help to shorten the event, however, it may have a lessened effect if used frequently and for more than 4 months. PLUS, Valium can be habit forming!! I use it only as needed, PRN, and in a very small dose, 1 mg. When I feel an event starting I try to get to a dark and quiet place, lie down, or get as flat as possible and start thinking about first names of people. Then go through them either by sex or start with A and go down the alphabet letter by letter until you reach the end. This gives your brain something to focus on rather than the mixed signals it is receiving! Sometimes this actually does help! Most time I will fall asleep and sleep for an hour or 2 before waking up without the room spinning! As with many other methods, this works sometimes and sometime it does not work! At least you can give it a try and then you will know for yourself.
Antivert (Meclizine) never worked a bit for me. All it did is ruin the next day with lethargy. Xanax works as mentioned above. Take a pill early on, go into a dark quiet place and lay down, close your eyes try to concentrate on something. Then hope you don't have to get sick and go to the BR - that ruins everything for a while.
I don't find it helpful during a vertigo attack. I sometimes use it for slight dizziness and I do think it helps with that. It's available over the counter as meclizine. I can get a bottle of 100 tablets at the grocery store for under $5. It's found near the Dramamine, is labeled Travel Sickness and the active ingredient is meclizine, 25 mg.
