Russian has no single word referring to the range of colours denoted by the English term 'blue'. Russian juxtaposes light blue (goluboy) & dark blue (siniy) as two separate basic colours; red, orange, yellow, green, blue goluboy (light blue), siniy (dark blue), indigo, & violet.

The absence of this umbrella term endows Russian speakers the ability to outperform non-Russian speakers when discriminating shades of blue.

Similarly, the Chinese language considers red (hóng) & pink (fěn hóng, "powder red") as varieties of the single colour red.

Would this explain why the Cyclades feature many abodes with blue doors & gates—an attempt to deny entrance to, in this case, a sort of generic evil?

I've wondered this before though never found a definitive answer. Help me Obi-Mel Kenobi, you are my only hope.

Obi- Mel Kenobi is a misnomer for sure, Nathan. *chuckling.

I have no idea about the choice for blue. I would love to think that it was to ward off evil, but I never read that. I’ve read that it was to represent sea and sky, the Greek flag to say in your face to the Turks. I love the colour blue, especially, the blue hour in summer shortly before sunset.

Marta, the sky is beautiful in all parts of the world, that’s certain. I hope you get feederover here, too.

My son has been sending me pictures of the large variety of birds that he’s seeing at the since they moved to the acreage. It reminded me of how clever some birds can be.

  6. I didn’t know what the Cyclades are, but after viewing the pictures of this beautiful place, I would like to think the people were brilliant enough to realize that the startling contrast of the white buildings, with the electric blue doors, against that water would be breathtaking to behold.

This little chameleon is so cute. I love it’s feet. I’m fascinated by how quickly its skin pattern changes after it hatches.

Scroll down a bit for the video. I recommend sound off, the music is way over the top!

    *laughs … you're so right.

Cute video, minus the friction found between the wee chameleon & the apocalyptic score.

I think having Black Friday in Canada is stupid. We don’t even know how to do it properly.

They'll catch on in a few years. Perhaps they need to watch some how-to videos from down here.

Maybe it would be a better idea if we took some lessons from the Canadians.

I am impressed with all Canadians!

  12. Yes. I don’t think Canadians want lessons from Americans, those beasts! LOL What about Boxing Day though, does that compare at all??

Thank you , Marta about your kind comments about Canucks. We’re a pretty decent bunch however. be. advised that we have our share of numpties, so maybe don’t admire all?

Autumn... Kudos for a southern belle knowing about Boxing Day. It has never been a big deal; we are usually in a tryptophan stupor by then and rendered incapable of aggression.

These days it’s no longer Boxing Day but rather Boxing Week; soon to be Boxing Month. There really are no great bargains anymore so we’re better off staying in our igloos and shopping on line .

I think I like the idea of Boxing Week ha ha. I myself have never seen a really great deal on a Black Friday in a shop. What I heard is that some retailers push their prices up before the “big day” and then they have goods at reduced prices that actually are their regular prices. They play tricks on please! Business is business, no mercy!

  15. Commercial exploitation surrounding the holidays? Say it isn’t so?! :p
I have a friend that buys potential presents year round. She only ever buys nice things ridiculously discounted, but that way she always has gifts on hand for anyone, and for any occasion...including Christmas. Up side, she never has to run out last minute for a gift. Down side, gifts are nice, not personal. I’ve always thought it a good idea for birthday presents, or baby shower gifts, etc, not really Christmas.

Yesterday I went to admire the Christmas lights in Regents Street (London) together with my daughter and friends. We had a lovely time. Towards the end of our outing we heard a big bang and when we turned round we saw a man on the floor in the middle of the street. A car had hit him, he wasn’t moving. We were horrified. I can’t stop thinking about him.

Marta, I know the lights are beautiful. It sounds magical to be out on the streets of London enjoying the lights and Christmas season.

How tragic that a man was hit by a car and you witnessed the aftermath. I hope he was able to be saved.

  20. Marta, that is awful. Is your daughter traumatized? I know you said she’s a teenager, but still...nothing worse than horrific memories at Christmas time :( ::hugs to you and daughter::
