In a conversation I had with my spouse this morning I learned about other things of note Americans take from Canadians. Conversation as follows: Me: Oh, good. I just received notification that the bubble wrap I ordered will arrive today. Geez...I didn’t realize it was shipping from Canada?! Spouse: So, basically, we just purchased air from Canada? ::Laughing:: Me: Well, I understand the air’s supposed to be cleaner up there, so that’s an added bonus. ::rolling my eyes/Laughing::
I’m enjoying the unusual mild weather. The temperatures have been well above zero during the day for three weeks. There’s no end in sight for this trend. Yay. It’s going to be hard to take when they go back to normal, but winter has been shortened up by quite a bit. There’s hardly any snow. We may have a brown Christmas.
My understanding is that London air is on par with New York City air, and I know what that’s like, so I don’t think I would either, Marta What’s a brown Christmas, Mel? Do I want to know?
Autumn, A brown Christmas is the opposite of a White Christmas. No snow, dead, brown grass. They are rare as hens’ teeth. I thought we might get one this year as the snow is almost all gone. The forecast is calling for 25 cm of snow tomorrow so there goes that .
The last time I had white Christmas was about 7 years ago. I am excited about you getting 25 cm of snow tomorrow MleC! I wish I was there
We had a white Christmas that year! Quite unusual for down here...my nephew was visiting that Christmas and it was the first time he’d ever seen snow in his ten years. He was sooo excited. Mel, I’m terrible at conversions but that’s almost a foot of snow, right?! Gosh, it’s going to be 15 Celsius tomorrow...next few days, even warmer. (Hey Marta! Let’s go house swap with Mel and Cheryl!) (Mel, Cheryl, I’m sorry. ONE of you will have to come to Alabama. I know, I know. It’s such a desirable location...)
You’re close , Autumn. 25 cm is just under 10 inches. 15C is down right balmy. We have had above zero temps since Nov 20. That’s a heat wave. It was fun while it lasted. Snow and colder tomorrow. Driving will be a pita as there is a bit of ice now from the rain we had last Friday. My dog isn’t 10 inches high so she’s going to need a toboggan! I’m afraid the switch will have to be Cheryl going to AL as I don’t think I’m allowed in the US. I can’t remember the last time I was across the line. You’re welcome up here anytiime, Autumn, regardless.
You are right Mel C it's not that easy to relocate. Many of us would need a visa unfortunately. I hope that Dixie is going to enjoy the snow. I am trying to imagine what it is going to be like for her to go for a walk. Unless she likes jumping ha ha Autumn I hope you are enjoying your 15 degrees in December. I would like either freezing temperatures or high enough to feel comfortable. Anything just above zero is not fun at all. We had snow the other day but it did not settle. The kids were so so excited to see the flakes ( even if they were melting straight away) How is everyone getting on with their Christmas preparations??
::sputtering:: You’re kidding?! I know it gets cold, but just...WOW. They don’t make weather like that in Alabama or Georgia. It gets cold, but probably not by your standards,Mel! Now I can’t stop thinking about the fact that I’ve been putting daily sunblock on my face for years, as sun protection, while everyday for years you, what, have had to put a gallon of Vaseline on your face for cold/wind protection???? Inquiring minds want to know. LOL What do you cold weather folk do for your face? If I were a cat, I’d already be trying to claw my way out of my grave because I’d have died from curiosity, if I had any lives left, that is... Ahhh shucks! Thank you Mel I wouldn’t really wish Alabama on anyone though...maybe it’s great if you have family here, or grew up here, but for a transplant like me, not so much. It’s too much like Alice Through the Looking Glass.
Marta, Dixie is hilarious in the deep snow. She loves to frolic in it. She stick her nose way into it, then comes up snorting with a pile of snow on her nose, then does it all over again. Walking is harder for her as she is so small; playing in it is the best. Autumn, It’s about to get cold. We are having -19 C today. I think that’s around -2F. If there’s no wind that’s not too bad. It’s getting worse as the week goes on and will be -25 aka -13F on Xmas day. I don’t use anything topical to protect from the cold. We just dress for it and go out. I will look like Nanook of the North later today but I’ll be warm and then I feel so virtuous when I’m back home! I have a passport so I could go into the US. I just don’t want to go these days. Maybe if you get an administration change, I would change my mind. I used to love going down for a weekend. I’d love to see Alabama, Autumn. The farthest south we ever got was a Kansas.
Mel C, I was trying to visualise Dixie playing in the snow with a pile of it on her nose. It must look hilarious . Good for her! At lest she can enjoy the white fluff. -19!!! I would like to be there. Not for too long though ha ha. I am not sure how to comment -25 ha ha Stay warm!!
NO idea why you feel that way, Mel. I’m, just clueless. Although, watching the news makes me think I might see you soon! I’ll give you a guided tour, then we can head over to Georgia and South Carolina. :ineapple out to welcome you::
It’s cold enough to make ice bubbles. These videos were made not far from here. http://canoe.com/news/national/ice-bubble-videos-during-alberta-cold-snap-go-viral
::jaw dropping:: Mel, you never said you lived in Antarctica! Oh, wait, I forgot. It’s actually colder where you live than in Antarctica at the present time! That’s just crazy to me. My husband had some customers in his restaurant yesterday who mentioned this information, and in disbelief, I checked. It’s true! Same with Cheryl’s neighborhood. *Currently, I hold the belief that we haven’t heard from Cheryl in the last day or two because her house is covered with 30ft. of snow, making an internet connection impossible*
You're half right, Autumn. I think at present we have about six inches of snow on the ground, but it's cold with wind chill advisories and warnings until next Tuesday. We've been without phone and internet service since the day after Christmas. Someone up the street had a water leak in the middle of the night. The city water department was called in. During the digging, someone cut through a gigantic cable that housed 900 lines providing telephone and internet service to local residents. Then the cable got full of water and it quickly froze. Crews have been working to restore service. As of yesterday, we were told that only half of the lines had been repaired and it could be the middle of next week before we got service back. I was surprised when I checked the phone a little while ago and got a dial tone. I was going to go to the library today to use a computer and get caught up, but then I remembered the library is about to undergo renovation and expansion and they are in the process of moving to a temporary building and have not yet completed the move. I'm glad you guys were able to carry on without me.
Missed you, Cheryl. What a pita to be without phone and internet for that long. Imagine what the poor souls in Puerto Rico are dealing with. So many of them still don’t have power after months.
Cheryl, you sure they didn’t have a new guy from Alabama trying to do the repair work? Just sayin’... I wonder how many years it will be before infrastructure/power grid is back up to pre-storm norms there?
