I have been taking 8mg 4 times a day for the last few years and I can’t say that it actually helps or not. I let prescription laps for about a month and I didn’t notice any difference when I started taking it again. I get it made at a compounding pharmacy. I know a lot of people take it. Can you actually say it helps? Just one of my thoughts since I’m sitting here taking another day off work because I’m dizzy.
There is a lot of research now that says you need to be taking at least 100mg a day. I take 240mg a day and finding it helpful.
I'm glad to see this post, I was prescribed 16 mg 3x a day and even paid the $200 and had it compounded and shipped, but haven't brought myself to take it. After coming out of remission I upped my JOH regime and didn't want to mix the results of JOH and betahistine. Since increasing my lysine, I haven't had as many vertigo attacks, but still have the daily head pressure that means a vertigo attack could rear its ugly head. I was wondering specifically what the betahistine helped with....the vertigo or the head pressure? I was also wondering if once I started to take the betahistine, I would have to take it forever, does one become dependent. Is it like going off an antiviral medication, if one stops taking it ? Thanks for posing the question Woodsrider.
when i was first diagnosed with MM. ENT prescribed me 24mg x 3. after few months, i went into remission for about 3 years. when it flared up again, i took 24mg x 3 again but never go into remission again.
I never found any relief from taking this. It was very frustrating as my ENT just continued to write me prescriptions for this for a year or more even though I showed no improvement whatsoever. AND he would never even tolerate a conversation about antivirals. His preference was straight to surgery. Eventually I just stopped taking them, no difference in symptoms. My GP then prescribed antivirals and I found full relief within weeks!
Betahistine is the most common prescribed drug in the world for menieres, just not in the US. It is a very safe, non addictive drug.
I've been taking it with my JOH for about two months now. Can't say that its done anything positive for me. My Dr. just bumped up the dosage from 8mg to 24mg twice a day, so we'll see. He also prescribed AVs after I asked him about it, he didn't have an issue with me trying the AVs at all. So, a few months with the increased Beta-Histine and AVs and then we'll see where we are......if nothing probably looking at a Laby. I want my life back.......
