Hi all. I haven't been on here in a long time... because I had been feeling GREAT. I saw a new doctor last January and he convinced me to try a diuretic again. A different one than the previous doctor gave me which made me feel weak. Within a week of starting that I felt great and continued to feel great until today. Today I woke up with the familiar extreme fullness and now I can't hear out of my ear. I can't believe it. One thing I am curious about though, 2 days ago I noticed a sore in the opening of my Meniere's ear. I wonder if that has any relation to my sudden flare-up.
Sorry to hear about your flare. I don't honestly know what causes symptoms to come back. I've had success on Acyclovir 800 mg initially 3 x day, then 2 x day. Good luck.
Definitely contact your doctor about the sore and the sudden hearing problem--probably put you on Prednisone--to stop hearing loss from being permanent.
One of the worst parts about this syndrome - My doc keeps telling me they're going to replace "disease"with "syndrome" - is that you can't get tested for it, no one really knows what causes it, and even if you get success with a certain line of treatment ... it might come back for an unknown reason. Some people keep a food and activity diary, including sleep time and the like, to see if they can narrow down a reason for having an attack. (Similar to migraine trackers.) Anti-virals seem to have worked for me and lots of others so if you haven't gone that route give it a try. My hearing has improved to some degree and though I have off days where I'm a little off kilter I haven't had a full blown vertigo attack for awhile now.
You know of course that cold sores are a kind of herpes virus, the same family that is believed to be the cause of menieres syndrome at least for many of us.mthe same antivirals are used for both.
