Did anyone suffer ear issues as a child? I had many ear infections growing up and even as an adult I have ear issues when I get a cold or have allergies. Do these ear infections weaken the ear and allow MM to develop? I know that Mm is an inner ear issue but would be interested to find out if there are others who have had chronic middles ear issues who now have MM or if anyone knows of any research in this area. Thank you.

    Welcome Rachel,
I have not had chronic ear infections.
I have received a wealth of information and support here.
A year ago I was prescribed antiviral medication and in a short time felt better; I haven't had vertigo in 6 months or more.
    - wish everyone the best -

I do not know of research that onnects early middle ear issues to menieres but i do know menieres can be thought to arise from trauma to either inner ear, that is either the menieres ear or the ‘good’ ear. I had an acoustic neuroma surgery in the right ear and developed cochlear hydrops in the left (actually probably both but the left ear nerve is gone so impossible to know). The doctors believe there is a relationship. I have read other trauma can do the same thing when sequestered proteins are released. It’s all about the immune system acting up. Somit seems plausible to me there might be a relationship to trauma from many years of middle ear infections which might at one time or another have aused damage to an inner ear.

Yes, as a child I had serious issues with ear infections. Every doc that has ever looked inside my ears have had the same reaction...You have a lot of scar tissue, you must of had a lot of ear infections as a kid!

Yes as a child, until I was about five, I had a lot of ear infections and I am remembered by being the toddler who walked around with a heating pad held to her ear. Later on I would get these infections in my throat and had repeated attacks of strep throat and had scarlet fever twice. I developed an allergy to penicillin because I had to take it so much and it wasn't until I was 19 and away at college the doctor there recommended I get my tonsils out. Unfortunately my childhood doctor didn't believe in tonsillectomies. I seemed a relatively healthy person and didn't even take any antibiotic for the next 25 years and then about five years ago I started to develop autoimmune disorders, food allergies and menieres. So there could be a connection. My ent has told me that my left ear,the menieres ear, has a smaller ear canal than my right one and tends to get wax build up more quickly. Hope this helps for your research.

I also had a lot of ear infections. Doctors have mentioned the scar tissue. I also have small ear and tubes.

I didn’t have ear issues but I used to have chronic sinus infections. When I was a kid the infections were never treated. I wonder if somehow having a gazillion sinus infections contributed to my mm.

I had no ear issues at all, but I did have frequent throat soreness and then eventually got my tonsils out. I did suffer from frequent migraines until I was 18 or so.
