Famciclovir is no longer working for me, so I am going to try Acyclovir. I have seen many posts stating certain manufacturers are not effective for certain individuals. It seems Northstar works for most on Famciclovir and Valacyclovir. Apparently, Northstar does not manufacture Acyclovir. For those who have had success on Acyclovir, could you tell me who the manufacturer is for your prescription? Thank you!
Good luck to you Robin. But your post sums up why I'm probably going with a laby. Can no longer deal with all the ridiculous mumbo-jumbo of antivirals.
Im in this boat as well. After finally convincing my cardiologist of all people to prescribe Val acyclovir I have been taking it since November. At first, things got really bad...which was a good sign that the virus was resisting and attempting to duplicate, etc. After a few months I started to really feel better. I had a few off days here and there but overall much better. Then about six weeks ago there was an issue with the pharmacy that filled my meds. They had been sending me the Northstar brand and someone dropped the ball on mailing my next does out. So in a pinch they transferred the script to my local Walgreens. Seemed to make sense at the time. Well, the Walgreens here doesn't fill Northstar, they use Camber. I should have known that something was different about this brand because it looks nothing like the dark blue Northstar horse pills. These look like cheap Tylenol. Alas, I took them anyways and within a week I was back to big time symptoms. At that time I didn't know that the brand change could cause this. It was only through reading on this forum that I grew suspicious. Of course by then it was too late to try and swap pills, get another refill, etc due to insurance not going anywhere near it. A 30 day supply of Northstar 1G tid pills is over $700 out of pocket. So after a month I finally got more Northstar meds in hand. Again however my symptoms have gotten pretty extreme with daily vertigo spells lasting 10-45 minutes. So it looks like I back to square one and will just be dealing with it for a few more weeks until the meds beat the virus back into submission. I'm going to up my lysine dose again although it does a number on my stomach. Good luck!
I did have success with acyclovir. I have no idea what brand. I do know my dr told me that it was imperative that acyclovir be spread throughout the day and i was scrupulous about that. I divided the dose into five times a day. I think i took 400mg 5 times a day.
Hmmmm, interesting..........I'm taking 1000mg twice a day now and not having any noticeable results (only been about 2-3 weeks though) maybe I should cut the pills and take them 4 times a day?
Two things, 1000mg tid may be necessary, and 2 to three weeks is nothing. Took me two months to feel anything. Keep at it!
Acyclovir does not persist like valtrex and famvir. Spread it out. Also, it is not an on off switch it is very gradual and takes a long time. Have you noticed ANY improvement since starting them or for that matter any change, even negative?
